Thrifting - Always Be On The Lookout - $11.69 Spent On Vacation, Sold For $443 Revenue... With The PERFECT Surprise Bonus Tonight!!

avatar
(Edited)

I went to 1 thrift store while on vacation in small lake town, spent $11.69 for 3 antique items, and sold them for $443.

The net profit of $366.10 after costs, shipping and fees covered the costs of my entire vacation... just because I put a little creative effort. If you have the opportunity, why heck not?

These items were small and didn't impede anything.

Here they were...

FIRST: two working 1930's aircraft cockpit lights that were new in their original boxes. I tested these out and the original bulbs still worked! As you can clearly see below, they both sold on the same day for a nice payday. They cost me $6.38 together and netted me a profit of $337.92 after my cost, fees and shipping.

Close up...

SECOND: This MikroTest coating thickness gauge, which measures the thickness of non-magnetic coatings on steel substrates on the magnetic attraction principle. Science. I bought it for $5.31 and sold it for $42.99 for $28.18 profit after my cost, fees and shipping.

Most people would look right over these vintage things without a clue that they had such great value. That's the trick. Things are always out there if you choose to try to look for them.

When you're thrifting, look up everything you can on eBay to see what it's recently sold for. That'll give you good feedback on whether it'll sell for a worthwhile price, and roughly how long it'll take to move.

It's a very simple formula if you choose to put some effort into it.

Thrifting is not always about the one-off snipes. I know what I'm doing, so this is easy for me. For newbies, you have to hit stores a few times a week to get consistent results. If you go to one store and struggle (it might not be the store's fault), you're not putting the odds in your favor.

It's sort of like going to a chain restaurant and not liking the burger you got, and saying the entire chain sucks so you won't go back. That's just dumb.

I've posted these cockpit lights a long time ago, but the message now is that you can make independent income when you're on vacation, or wherever you are. Thrift stores are everywhere if you research for them. Recycling is too.

If you don't need extra cash, then there's no need. But, if you're struggling to make ends meet, and feeling guilty about your vacation expenses, do yourself a favor and take some proactive steps to recoup some of that outlay. Trust me, you'll feel like a genius if you find something profitable, and it could change the entire mood of your day or trip -- totally worth the upside. As a worst case, you'll have a little fun hunting around...

Making Your Own Arbitrage Opportunities...

When looking up the aircraft lights again now, I found one available for sale now online or $5, with $4.25 shipping. From above, that's a pure steal of a price. I just bought it right now!

See what I mean?

Thanks for your interest,

@steemmatt

Giving some thought to returning to Ebay as you suggested last week. Looks like with the managed payments they are pushing sellers into I will need to have shipping costs in hand and figure worst case scenario getting it back in 10-14 days when they finally release the money to my bank account. Spent an hour today reading a thread on it on Ebay and has really damaged some sellers who opted in without knowing how it would affect their model. So will be dipping my toes in until I have a few sales under the belt to fund shipping and occasional scammer losses.

Congrats, your posts finally convinced me to test the waters again. I swore I would never sell on their again years ago, lol. But you have made me see value in things I never would have thought to look.

Could I still earn money from a 2008 iMac that I've been too lazy to sell so far? :P
Is most of your sales done through eBay by the way? I've been using it more and more and finding great stuff. Personally scouting for vintage silk fabrics in all shapes and forms for my felting adventures :D

I think Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace for cash would be better for selling your iMac. It'll avoid shipping costs and any shipping damage risk. Make sure to fully wipe the drive though. Apple products move fast. You could sell your keyboard and mouse on eBay though. Search by the A# underneath to see what they run for to see if it's worth it. The computer likely wouldn't be worth more than $80 USD though if I'm guessing, but double check on eBay (noting that shipping is often built in).

I sell a decent mix between eBay and Craigslist, but have recently added Facebook Marketplace. I've also sold some stuff on Etsy before, but not too much.

Since you mentioned, I recycled the top component of a Passap E6000 huge knitting machine I haven't listed yet without the power supply. I couldn't find the power supply, so it's an apartment decoration for now. I guess I'll be listing it untested soon for cash & carry. I sold the Victor Knitting Motor Counter that was on it for $75 though to get something from it already.

I also recently sold a vintage Bernina sewing machine I found outside (they're in high demand for some reason). That would've been perfect for you in hindsight. :(

Whoaaaaa - a knitting machine! Awesome! :D Hahaha. I need a bigger house if I could ever have all the tools and supplies I want to make everything I dream of ;-)

Anyway, Facebook Marketplace seems to be a thing indeed, going to dig into that a bit more. I've been avoiding Fb so didn't realize that's where people sell now too. Craigslist is not a thing here, so eBay and Fb it is.

Thanks for the tips for the keyboard and mouse! :D

Crap I missed one?! I got mine on Mercari. Where did you snag yours? I guess we'll be competitors to resell ours now huh? I'll still have to test mine so I might not list it immediately.

On eBay my man!

We can just both list'em for 199.99 and they will sell.

Ahhhh! Beat at my own game. Nice find. Arbitrage at its finest. They'll take a while to sell, but they eventually will.

What do you have to do to test the light? Can it be done with a battery? Mine came in today.

I'd done it with my Dad back then on an electrical apparatus he had. I think his vintage tool has dials to get the exact voltage/current needed, and they we connected the wires to the nodes. It was a simple task, but you need to have the right dose of electricity to avoid frying it. I think the box or unit had the right amps on it. Mine is still wrapped up to not know yet.
