Ryan O’Leary, 30, and Sheila O’Leary, 35, were arrested in Cape Coral, Florida after their 18-
month-old son died on September 27 weighing only 17 pounds, which is the weight of an
average seven-month-old. An autopsy found that the toddler died after suffering complications related to malnutrition, including dehydration, microsteatosis of liver and swelling of hands, feet and legs, Cape Coral police said in a statement. Sheila O’Leary told police that her family is vegan and only eats raw fruits and vegetables. She said that she also breast fed her toddler, adding that the toddler had not eaten solid food in a week and had only been breastfed. They charged with aggravated negligent manslaughter among other charges and are being held in jail until their arraignment on December 9. The NHS advises a vegan or vegetarian diet is suitable for babies and children but parents must ensure the child is receiving sufficient nutrients and calories.

As for me I don't know the right food for a toddler and I'll hardly condemn veganism but it's not proper for an infant to be fed less I'm sure if researched properly there might be a way for them to feed their child and another thing is that they have no right to impose veganism on a child as well so I think it's a really Dilemmic situation, either way no sugarcoating the fact that they killed their child.

Choice of diet can be a form of religion too. I am pragmatic about what I eat, but opt to exclude all meat. My kids were brought up without it and did fine. They were breastfed. If your beliefs cause harm or suffering to others then you need to reconsider them.

Hmm to me this should be more about parents failing to understand the signs that their children are malnourished and needing medical attention.

It also screams that the parents hadn’t educated themselves about what a child needs in their diet in the early stages of their development.

There are so many things that are worrying in this story. The parents much be very poorly educated and perhaps a little dense.

The story gives vegans a bad look. I personally know a few vegans. And most know how to properly feed themselves. I doubt any of them would feed their children a vegan diet right from birth however.

Humans: evolved to the point that they cannot raise their young. Dang.
