Virginia Lawmakers Pass Protections for LGBTQ Folks šŸ³ļøā€šŸŒˆ

ā–¶ļø Watch on 3Speak

The Virginia Values Act establishes gender identity and sexual orientation as protected
classes under anti-discrimination statutes, meaning that businesses and individuals can no
longer deny service, housing, employment, or credit on the basis of oneā€™s LGBTQ status. The bill also includes language that allows the stateā€™s Attorney General to take action in civil court if they notice a particular person or business ā€œengaged in a pattern or practice of resistanceā€ to civil rights protections (including but not limited to sexual orientation and gender identity). While the bill isnā€™t quite law yet ā€” it needs to flip chambers and then be signed into law by Democratic Governor Ralph Northam ā€” the legislation is considered a safe bet. Northam has expressed his wholehearted approval.

Seems crazy that we need laws to ensure people are treated decently, but there are those who will hate other just because they are different. The US south has a lot of history in this area of course. When you see what gay people have to go through it's hard to believe that this is just some lifestyle choice. Following a religion is more of a choice.

Well, I guess that's the right thing to do. In the same way the right to bear arms does not make much of a distinction as to who should have access to them, therefore so many cases of crazy people killing rampages, civil rights should not have exceptions either.
Under religious excuses, certain groups have been discriminated and I am sure that if the opposite were done, if, say, Christians were denied services under the assumption that their Christianity offends whoever non-Christian denying said service, then it would be an outrage.
Unfortunately, we have sent a lot o back and forth in this kind of legislation.

Everyone who is hurt deserves protection, but that does not mean that he should invade his world to others.
