Yakking with dolphins and my bro

avatar

Thankfully Christmas only comes around once a year - I like it, but it's a lot of effort for just the one day is it not? We had a great day though, some awesome food and good times with some family members. Overall a really nice day.

But time moves on and tomorrow is a brand new day. It's Proclamation Day in South Australia - British Govenor John Hindmarsh arrived at Holdfast Bay, December 28, 1836 — The day the vice-regal proclamation to establish South Australia as a British province was first read. There's a ceremony and all which I have written about previously...Boring!!

What isn't boring is that we are heading out tomorrow with my kayaks for a paddle. I'm taking my brother who is here visiting from interstate. We will be heading to Garden Island for a paddle around the mangroves area and inlet which is always pretty cool considering it's also a dolphin sanctuary and there's always pods of dolphins there doing their thing. They are often happy to come close to the yaks too, they have a look at us and say hello too. Cute little things. Smart too.

So we'll be heading out quite early and yakking for a few hours which I'm looking forward to very much.

My brother is heading home on the 27th, a 4,500 kilometre drive to the very north of Australia, and I'm going to miss him, his wife and my awesome little nephew. It's been good having them here but won't be so good having to say good bye. We will have to though...I might get teary...Shh, don't tell anyone.

I guess many of you have done the same sort of things I have this Christmas, spent it with family, or will be in a few hours as your day rolls around. I hope you all enjoy it as I have and manage to some great memories. Eat too much as well...That's what Christmas is all about...Oh, you might want to look out for my what Santa brought me post tomorrow afternoon. 😉

It's now after 11pm here in Adelaide, Australia and it's coming on to around early afternoon in Europe and the UK, and the sun will be coming up in the States soon. It's time for bed for me, I need my beauty sleep a long Christmas day, but I wish you all the best for yours!

I'll be kayaking with dolphins tomorrow, but drop me a line...I'll get back to you like always.

Christmas Day as a commercial and social concept is totally ridiculous. Makes for a great excuse to see loved ones, but also causes much distress between incompatible family members forced to be nice to eachother over turkey and cranberrysauce. To read you are kayaking with dolphins is refreshing as is the thought you are done and dusted with this day of days.

Yes, it's very commercialised isn't it. I yak seems like way more fun to me. 😁

It was such a nice time. There's something peaceful and relaxing about floating around on the water. It was cool to see the dolphins up so close too...They are such interesting creatures, inquisitive buggers also.

I've always heard so many wonderful things about the dolphins like saving swimmers and such. Do you have actual interaction with them like playing around with them? Aren't they the most intelligent after humans?

I've heard something like that about them being the second-most intelligent animal after the human. I think many are more intelligent than humans too!

Nah, we don't interact with them, certainly don't touch them. They just swim along beside us. It's good enough. I fed one at Seaworld on the Gold Coast once though.

That has to be thrilling to have them swimming beside you!

Yes, it's quite exciting...And if they are there it's a fair chance to say the sharks aren't. Always a good thing.

Do they actually chase sharks away? I think I heard that somewhere but didn't know if it was true.

They will attack them yes. It doesn't make humans safe though. A shark and a dolphin on-on-one would probably see the shark win, but a few dolphins may be more than a shark can handle...Depending on the shark though. We get Great White Pointers...Bull sharks...The bad sort.

Enjoying your posts, and also looking for an update on the Bush Fire situation?

Still loads of fires. Here's in SA not so bad although today there was another warning. WA, NSW and Vic are bad though. 30,000 people just got evacuated from Gippsland, Victoria. The weather is heating up again and today we have a front with 90kph winds coming through. Dangerous conditions.

My brother and his wife just drove through some fire-affected areas...
