Virtual Reality: Going To Change Everything Including Bringing The Dead Back To Life

One technology that gets overlooked in today's maze of technological potential is virtual reality. I think the reason for this is the fact that it had so many starts and stops over the last few decades. The reason I feel it had a tendency to get ahead of itself is the fact that the computers simply were not powerful enough. Even today, it still required a rather expensive PC to have enough to power the applications.

Of course, this will all change over the next few years as computing power continues on the "Moore's Law" curve, even if it is slowing.

So what kind of potential does this hold and what are the business applications?

To start, how about bringing the dead back to life. This is what a company in South Korea did. It put together a team that was able to recreate a park where a mother and her now deceased daughter use to visit. By using a child actor, they were able to shoot the movements of which the deceased child's image was overlaid.

Here is a video the mother posted on YouTube.

As you can see, it was realistic enough to generate a strong emotional response from the mother. Obviously, she is well aware that the image there is not her real child yet she still felt the connection.

This brings up some very important points though. While the technology is still in the embryonic stages, it does hold enormous potential. To start, we believe the equipment is only going to get more powerful over the next few years. Things will really start to get interesting, however, when we are able to upload videos and photos of the deceased person. This will take it to an entirely different level.

Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg. How will virtual reality affect gaming? Are we going to see a manifestation of the film "Ready Player One"? What about shopping? Is the virtual mall in our future?

As we can guess the impacts of this are far-reaching. I just commented about Simon Property Group, one of the largest holders of retail space in the world. This company is facing tremendous headwinds with the decrease in mall traffic resulting in the closing of stores. What will something like this do to a company like that?

In the United States, we are already seeing grocery stores get into the delivery business. Virtual reality could enable one to do all the shopping from the sofa and have it delivered. Imagine being able to all your shopping done without having to leave the house yet actually "walk" through the aisles getting what you need.

We have seen the success of online stores. The world of virtual stores is just around the corner.

What is the potential disruption across the board here? At the same time, what are the profit opportunities? We are going to see entire virtual worlds opening up with businesses built upon them. These will be no different than "non-virtual" businesses (again think Ready Player One). In my opinion, the use of cryptocurrency is going to facilitate the transactions in this world with blockchain accounting for it all.

When you think about it, the limitations of a 3D reality are removed. This allows for creation in every direction without any restriction. Want to build a modern shopping mall in 18th century London? You can do that. We can also attend the 1986 Super Bowl.

It is prudent to think about these things as we go forward. If tokenization becomes a highly accepted for of structuring, there are going to be a huge number of opportunities presented to all of us. How would you like to own some of the virtual space overlaying the first city being built on Mars? Wouldn't it be great if you could pay for it with some of your excess Steem-Engine tokens?

Personally, I am looking forward to erecting a string of virtual billboards all around the first Martian City.

Going virtual is really going to make things interesting.
