My friend gave me this Yam vegetable last week. He said his family owned a small farm in the village. Yam is an edible tuberous root vegetable which is like a potato, and grows in tropical regions like my country. It grows more like ornamental grasses and lilies and often mistaken for sweet potatoes. However, yams are less sweet and more starchy.

So I brought it home and told my mom-in-law that a friend gave it to me for free. She said I am lucky to get it for free because the last time she bought it, it cost her MYR16.00 per kg (USD3.85). She suggested to cook Yam with Pork. She said that Yams are high in vitamins B6 and C, making them a good food to help reduce the risk of heart disease and able to lower cholesterol.

Here's how it looks like once you peel the skin and cut it. It have dark brown skin and pale flesh, slippery and may froth when cut. I love the white colour texture here. It looks so clean and yummy. You need to wear a plastic or rubber glove because the juice or fluid from this vegetable can cause your skin to be itchy. The traditional way to get rid of the itchy taste is to dry it under the hot sun. The faster and easier way is to deep-fried or cook it. The flavor of white yams is slightly sweet and delicate.
