A friend of mine was in Mumbai for a couple of days and I met him yesterday. He lives in Switzerland at the moment and I met him during my post-graduate studied in France. I was meeting him after 04 years and so the lunch place had to be relaxed, and something that is the highlight of Mumbai Food Scene. So I decided to meet him at Britannia & Co - an certain member of any 'top 10 places to eat in Mumbai' list.

The restaurant is located in Fort area and serves Parsi food. It only accepts cash, so when I reached, I had to go look around for an ATM. My friend hadn't arrived by then, so I went searching for ATM. It wasn't crowded when I reached by but the by the time my friend and his wife reached there was already a waitlist. We had to wait for around 15 minutes to get a table.

For a restaurant this famous, one would expect fancy interiors, but this place is old school. In fact this is true of most Parsi restaurants. The don't change a damn thing and some restaurants would have remained untouched since the restaurant opened some 50 to 60 years ago.

I like simple menus and this place just had a one page thing.

The waited was extremely chatty and funny. The Parsi community is preceived to be extremely light hearted and conversations with them can bring a smile to your face. He was happy to give us recommendations. We ordered a Keema Berry Pulao, Sali Boti, and Chicken Cutlet, along with 3 Chapatis. For drinks we got Fresh Lime and Diet Pepsi.

The food arrived fairly quickly. It was a busy place, and slowness isn't part of the game here. Let's look at the food items one by one.

Sali Boti - This is a mutton dish and the gravy was tangy from tomatoes. It was garnished with potato strips that add crispiness to the bite. It wasn't too spicy either and the meat was easy to chew and very succulent.

The chicken cutlet was a bit different from what I have had before. It came with an orange sauce, and again with the garnishing of crispy potato strips. The meat was kind of grated or pulled pork like and there was nice layer of crispy batter on top. Again, not spicy at all. It was a nice dish to enjoy.

Berry Pulao is key. It is one of the most famous Parsi foods and is like biryani but has a lot of cherries and raisins on top. I personally don't like sweet fruit on my food. However, Britannia had diced them very well and I did not notice it at all while enjoying the Keema pulao. Keema is mutton mince and again, just like all other dishes, no heat at all in this. Just plain flavours, aroma and juice from mutton mince and little bit of Indian spices. Near perfect. Thankfully this did not have potato wafers on top.

We all thoroughly enjoyed out food asked for the cheque. The total was INR 2100 or $10 per person, which I think makes this place great value for money. We were quite full from eating some delicious food, so did not opt for dessert. We wanted to sit and wait for another friend but we were told that there are people waiting, so we quickly paid, and left.

It was a great experiece. We got to eat amazing food, check out how restaurants would have looked 50 years ago, and had great conversations about life in India versus living abroad, finance, politics, other friends. I should not add all this to my overall rating but the place is meant to relax and enjoy with friends. There is a unique buzz from the way the place is decorated designed, how people are seated etc., so I will rate this place 4.5 on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being best. I do not know why am I taking 0.5 away from them I absolutely recommend anyone and everyone to visit Britannia & Co, if they are even in Mumbai.
