Hey, guys! Welcome back to our culinary journey, me and my wife are food hunters and culinary lovers. We will share our journey regularly here, and today we will share about one of our favourite restaurants!

Made in Japan

Japanese cuisines are famous, they got a lot of die hard fans. My wife is one. She never skip a week without Japanese food!

Yesterday we visited one of our favourite Japanese restaurants in Medan, Sushi Tei. We decided our theme for that day while we still on the move back then.

Fried Madness!

So, that day we decided to order fried food! Oh, you don't know? Yes, fried sushi is exist!

We ordered fried sushi, fried rice and fried salmon skins. Everything is fried!

Negitoro Maki Fried

This is a sushi with cucumber, nori (seaweed sheet) and ground tuna fillings, deep fried with mild flour.
Garnished with carrot noodle and mayonnaise.

It tasted great! The tuna and cucumber combination create a fresh taste of seafood.

Fried Salmon Skins

This is wifey's favourite! The first thing she would ask when we just ushered to a table is "is Fried Salmon Skin available?"

You could guess it already, it's not always available. This Salmon Skin is a secret menu, it's not mentioned on this restaurant menu, yet their regular customers know about it.

This restaurant only served fresh Salmon Skin. So, the availability of this menu is depend on how much Salmon have been peeled to that hour. If it's not available when you asked, it may be available in about 2 to 3 hours ahead.

So, yesterday is one of our lucky days!

Kani Mentai Mayo Roll

This one is a sushi roll, which freshly made by the chef by rolling the fillings inside sticky (Japanese) rice wrappings.

It's not fully fried, only its topping. Kani means crab, so it filled with crab's meat. It tasted good! One of my personal favourites, the crab's meat texture is addictive!

sushi-tei-5.jpg

Fried Rice with Fried Chicken fillets

Some of my overseas friends ever joked about how Indonesian people is tend to overdo their cookings. Yeah, the rice is already cooked and we cook it again (fry it) to be Fried Rice which is one of Indonesian iconic cuisines!

This Fried Rice is a classic one, which cooked with dry seasonings. All the herbs, garlics, onions were manually cut (not blended with food processor or using powder seasoning like common Fried RIce).

Topped with Fried Chicken fillets, additional fried onions and scrambled egg. The taste was complete and whole. IMO, this is how all Fried Rice should be fried.

Gari (Pickled Gingger)

I want to highlight this thing. Lots of people been eating sushis without knowing about this pickle gingger importance.

You should eat it after every sushi or meals before eating different meals to clean the previous taste from your mouth. So, you could completely feel the taste of every single meal with no or minimum contamination.

It is made from sweet, thinly sliced young ginger that has been marinated in a solution of sugar and vinegar. Young ginger is generally preferred for gari because of its tender flesh and natural sweetness

It also contain minor anti-microba, which good to consume if you eat some sashimi (raw fish meals).

Hot Ocha

We strongly recommend you to drink Ocha, especially the hot/warm one. It'll help your digestion and will complete the taste of your meals better.

Don't get me wrong, juices is good too, but at least don't eat sushi with any soda/soft-drink beverages. You'll ruin the taste.

That's all folks!

It's a wrap from us, for now!
We'll be back with more stories about our journey!

Oh wow!
I visited Batam a few times, got same relatives and friends there.
I was born in Medan, I travel a lot tho. But since this February I came back here, actually am still contemplating about to settle down here in Medan or in Bali.

Do you come back to visit your family here, sometimes?

Oh yeah, my parents are Javanese and living in Malang, East Java. And also many friends both in Batam and Malang.
Hmm, I heard that Medan is also nice place, never been there, but I have many Batak friends in Batam.
And, Bali...oh I would love to live there if I have a chance. But mostly of my friend said that Bali is not as nice as before, not sure about it tho, it’s been a long time since I didn’t go there.

yeah, your friends not wrong about Bali 😅
Bali has gone haywire lately, but they're still beautiful places (non mainstream spots) there.
but, there's a local movement starting there to help restoring Bali to what it should be.

#tasteem-curation

Great review! I love the fact you wrote about the ginger as people really don't take notice of this "extra bit".

Yes, I learned about 'Gari' directly from my Japanese friend, they also told me to eat the whole roll, not by munching it half and half 😅
because the art of eating sushi is to feel all the ingredients as a whole experience, a unity.

I love sushi 🍣
