La psicopedagogía es una disciplina que estudia al sujeto y su comportamiento en situación de enseñanza y aprendizaje. El psicopedagogo es el encargado de descifrar, evaluar y determinar una intervención directa a un alumno.

Su campo de investigación se encuentra entre el manejo de los problemas de aprendizaje, la orientación vocacional, el apoyo a necesidades educativas especiales y los programas educativos diferenciales.

El psicopedagogo requiere de conocimientos de psicología evolutiva, de psicología del aprendizaje, de psicolingüística, de técnicas didácticas, y psicología general. Particularmente y por experiencia de personas concidas que se desempeñan en el área, son maestros con habilidades especiales.

Son estos maestros experimentados del área de niños en edad inicial los que detectan a niños con dificultades de aprendizaje con bastante frecuencia. Ante su insistencia los padres buscan ayuda especial. Ellos tienen una experiencia de vida, el psicopedagogo el conocimiento de los libros y a veces y con muchísima frecuencia en su familia hay un niño especial.

Ha habido alguna confusión sobre que es un psicopedagogo, es un maestro o es un psicólogo. A veces lo entienden como un ”psicólogo para niños”. Y no es así. La Real Academia de la Lengua define la psicopedagogía como:

“la rama de la psicología que se ocupa de fenómenos de orden psicológico para llegar a una formulación más adecuada de los métodos didácticos y pedagógicos”.

Por lo tanto, se ocupa de todo lo que tiene que ver e influye en el proceso de aprendizaje del niño, tanto a nivel de rendimiento, como cognitivo y en lo emocional. La psicopedagogía se desarrolla no tan solo en el contexto educativo, sino incluye ámbitos familiares, en los empresariales, pueden trabajar con adultos, centros recreativos, centros de tratamientos de prevención contra las adicciones y desarrollo laboral.

El área de trabajo de los psicopedagogos incluye la diversidad atendiendo las necesidades educativas particulares de cada niño. La orientación académica buscando la madurez vocacional más conveniente para el niño. El programa educativo que permita el aprendizaje de habilidades sociales, valores morales y que sea capaz de resolver conflictos que se le presenten.

There has been some confusion about who is a psycho-educator, is a teacher or is a psychologist.

Fueron una serie de pasos y aportes en el área de psicología y educación que cambiaron la mentalidad, en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, fuertemente influido por el positivismo científico de Auguste Comte, pedagogía de la acción, John Dewey (1859-1852), y seguida en Europa por los pedagogos Georg Kerschensteiner (1854-1932) y Maria Montessori (1870-1952).

El suizo Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) sería el primero en abordar la estrecha relación existente entre el psiquismo y la educación en su tratado Emilio.

Se encuentran autores muy influyentes en este campo de la psicología como son: Jean Piaget (teoría psicogenética), Ausubel (teoría del aprendizaje significativo). El término se publicó por primera vez en 1908, en un ensayo presentado en París donde se leyó la palabra psycho-pédagogie escrito por G. Persigout.

En los Estados Unidos se incluyó la educación especial como parte del ámbito educativo a partir de (1931).
En Latinoamérica (Argentina) se comenzó a usar el término en la década de los 50, nace como unión de las disciplinas psicológicas y pedagógicas, para atender demandas sociales surgidas en el recinto escolar.

Ha sido un largo camino de aprendizaje con la combinación de la psicología y la educación como bandera para de esta manera evolucionar en este campo que aún le queda mucho por desarrollar.
