What I want for Christmas: 12 Days of Cristmas- Day 1

avatar
(Edited)

My bestie, silverd510, started a tag which he called #twelvedaysofchristmas, a sort of a Santa’s wish list for stackers. You can read more about this tag and the rules to join in here .

Like him and those who want to join in on this fun article series, I shall be posting a bar, round or coin a day [for 12 days] that I would love to get as a gift.

For my 12 Days of Christmas Day 1, I wish to be gifted the US Silver Dollar pictured below!

2007 US Jamestown 400th Anniversary Commemorative Proof Silver Dollar

Those who know me may immediately guess why I want this particular US Silver Dollar.

And if not the PROOF Silver Dollar coin, then I'll gladly settle for the

2007 Jamestown Commemorative Silver Dollar BU

The 2007 Jamestown 400th Anniversary Commemorative Silver Dollar was struck in accordance with legislation passed by Congress and signed by the President on August 6, 2004, as Public Law 108-289. This coin was produced by the Department of the Treasury, United States Mint to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of Jamestown, Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in America.

The obverse (heads side) design of the 2007 Jamestown Silver Dollar features Three Faces of Diversity, representing the three cultures that came together at Jamestown.

The reverse (tails) design is a depiction of the three ships which brought the first English settlers to Jamestown in 1607.

About the three ships...[and the reason I like this US Silver Dollar is because it is a vessel coin]

The Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery – England. Discovery: c. 1602 – sometime after 1611; Godspeed: c. 1606 – unknown; Susan Constant: before 1606 – after 1615

The Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery are the most enigmatic ships on our list. Not because of their notable journey or any mystery surrounding the landing at Jamestown, but enigmatic because there’s no hard evidence that pinpoints what happened to them long after that. It’s as if these three British ships disappeared into the mist of history.

Susan Constant was the largest of the three ships. She carried 105 male colonists to Jamestown. The ship was captained by Christopher Newport (1561-1617), a privateer who earned a living in his pre-expedition days by raiding Spanish ships in the Caribbean. According to legend, he captured and transported back to England two crocodiles for King James I.

These ships marked the release of two commemorative coins celebrating the 2007 Jamestown dollar and five-dollar gold coins.

The Jamestown dollar was designed by Donna Weaver and rendered by Don Everhart. The coin features a trio of figures; central is a likeness of Captain John Smith adapted from Simon de Passe’s 18th-century portrait. The other two represent a member of the Powhatan tribe and possibly an African woman. The first Africans did not arrive at Jamestown until 1619 when a Dutch ship brought them to trade as servants for supplies[7]. The coin’s inscription, rendered in incuse lettering, reads FOUNDING JAMESTOWN.

The reverse features the best interpretation of the ships on U.S. coinage. This design was drawn by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Charles Vickers. The ships are to scale and realistically detailed.

On John Mercanti’s gold five-dollar obverse, a ship (most likely Susan Constant) is seen in the distance, filling the space between John Smith and a Powhatan Indian.

Great choice for day 1 SS. Its going to be a challenge to not over commit in the first few days and go straight to the expensive stuff.. I'm already getting my day 2 ideas together..

The possibilities are endless!

I can only speculate what happened to those ships not in any scholarly way, perhaps more in a fictional sense. Pulling out my map and I could imagine them sailing close to the upper tip of the Bermuda Triangle.... yeah, I up late on my night off.

Hehehe... that moji-you may be a clue to the mystery, sis @kerrislravenhill! I think you can guess the succeeding types of coins that are on my wish list. I just love vessel coins, and I don't really have much of them in my collection. They are all so expensive. You know me, I first buy what is in the foundation of my stack, and then generics of specific designs so that there is some semblance of a "collection" (thus my SOLs, Eagle designs), and unfortunately, vessel designs are not readily found in generic inexpensive silver.
Enjoy your "weekend", and I hope that it will be a relaxing one, sis. Take care 🥰🌺🤙and a million Hugs and Kisses 🤗💕💋!!!!

I love vessel coins. I have wanted to have a collection of coins with ships... I only have a few.
I've been enjoying your landscape photographs, @clitadias. It is unfortunate that I don't get regular notifications. And my steemit will not allow me to research by user name. When you come to my blog, then I am able to click on your avatar and name to get to yours! Yet at times, my partiko just has you right there in my notifications. I have just put you an on auto vote, but it does not mean that I've seen your article. Strange, huh?
Have a lovely day, and take care🥰🌺🤙 !tip

Yes, the US Mint puts out a Commemorative Coin, I think there is at least one commemorative coin a year. But the US Mint does not put out as nearly as many coins as Australia and Canada do, both of which put out coins just to market them... these two mints are almost mass-producing coins every year. The United States is such a large country and an old country, that there are many events to commemorate.
Have a lovely day, bestie, And thank you again for the opportunity to use a fun tag! Take care 🥰🌺🤙 and Tons of hugs🤗🤗🤗🤗 !tip

Hahaha... I missed everything while I was not into silver and gold. Before I started stacking, I was clues about anything related to precious metals. So... you and me both missed this coin when it was first introduced. Thanks, @pocketchange!
