Norfed 1 Oz Round

Another recent LCS pickup, this is known as an American Liberty Dollar. Colloquially called a NORFED round. NORFED stands for "National Organization for the Repeal of the Federal Reserve and the Internal Revenue Code". With a name like that, you may be able to guess where this story is headed.

These rounds were minted as an alternative US currency. The founder thought it was a mistake for the US to move away from a precious metals backed currency, so he sought to rectify this situation by making his own.

It turns out the federal government doesn't look too kindly on things like that, so they shut him down. So this is NOT legal tender, NOT money, NOT spendable currency. It's something better. It's an ounce of silver with a cool story behind it. I'll take that any day.

Very cool Silver round, I found out that a lot of these were seized by the Feds and then later the court ruled in favor of returning them to the owners!!

There are actually lots of different variations on the basic design. Different denominations, and even paper notes.
