Is the Coronavirus really slowing down?

avatar

hmmmm, this guy might be onto something here...

The stats seem to support his theory:

... or is it a case of governments/countries managing the spread effectively?

Here in South Africa things are just getting started. The number of cases basically doubled yesterday, and as of today schools have been closed, public gatherings prohibited etc. etc. ... which has really thrown a spanner in the works for people like myself that rely on "public gatherings" for our income :-(

Check out this post (https://steempeak.com/steemsa/@snorcity/national-state-of-disaster-officially-declared-in-south-africa-restrictions-imposed-due-to-coronavirus) for what happened in South Africa last night in response to Coronavirus.

At this point, I can't trust anybody. I'm not going to die of the virus but I can be a carrier that will kill older people.
The virus is a fancy flu
The virus came from eating fancy rats and shit
The virus is deadly blahblahblah. Fuck me. I just want my alts to pump

I think that's kinda the point isn't it? The rona's slowing down a bit now, or seems like it is in media, for several reasons (imho). First, China's is straight up slowing down, both due to them having hit their peak (people who have recovered can't get the same strain again) and they ramped up their response rapidly, if a bit late. Italy or SK is my current canary for developed countries that aren't at (or may currently be at) peak, with good responses. They're still having issues though, at least Italy, due to hospital beds and ventilators. The US, we haven't started seeing the worst yet I don't think. My job just 'quarantined' today, but we're all semi-remote in the first place. It seemed though, that everyone was starting to freak out last week and this weekend, when they should have been social distancing for longer. The whole issue is the asymptomatic carrier, who goes out and meets ppl but doesn't think they're sick because they have no symptoms.

I'm not trying to fear monger really, I just think this is how it's gonna go. My mom was in Italy during the start of their outbreak and is fine right now, also in self-quarantine, but that scared the shit out of me (and also I was surprised I didn't have to work to convince her to self-quarantine). I don't think we should talk about it like the rona is slowing down though, I think we should put it in terms of countries having effective responses. Italy, SK, and more are looking like it's slowing down because they're being proactive about it.

A school board member or something (I can't remember I've been consumin so much this week), said this week (paraphrased), we won't know afterwards if we went overboard or were appropriate in our response. But it will be all too apparent if we did not do enough. I think we just keep distancing and staying safe for now, until there's no major threat of community spread within our own community. I posted an article yesterday that I thought drew some good comparisons in how America and China are getting similar outcomes with (depending on outlook) very different approaches in their response.

I hope you're staying safe man! Maybe try streaming for your gatherings? Although I guess it's hard (and not v fun) to have a braai alone. Cheers!

Yeah... Things are definitely getting a little crazy... literally all my events have been cancelled for the next 3 months, and even had to close one of our (1500 person) venues... no point in opening that for < 100 people.

I've got a couple of projects that have been on the "TODO-list" for months (even years) that will finally get some attention now.

Stay safe on your side too... see you on the other side ;-)

Did you read the article? Yes, it's gaining momentum in countries that are just starting (for example South Africa that literally "close-up shop" yesterday)... but in the earlier countries it's showing "evidence" of dissipating ... hmmmm

Of course I read it. All over Europe is on fire and the disease is spreading. Only in China is there a slowdown.
