eSports: Call of Duty League 2020

eSports continues to demonstrate its strong trend of growth as audiences continue to consume its content and participate in its events. In addition, more games are becoming more formal in creating leagues and seasons to support the demands of the audiences. Call of Duty has taken the next step in this formation as they have gone into formal franchising for its upcoming new league based on the latest game in the franchise, Modern Warfare.

Call of Duty was historically been a competitive scene based on teams grouping up and playing in bracket tournaments for pool prizes. However, the last two years the approach has been taken to get teams into leagues and seasons. This has proven to be successful as audiences have grown to not only the competitive events but also the online streams of them. Players and teams have become increasingly popular which have brought large branding and sponsorship opportunities for many involved. However, it has been tough to keep players consistent with teams as it has been an immature market with revenues still lagging behind the costs of running some operations and supporting players.

The next iteration has now been announced and franchising has been done to keep teams close to cities that have expanded the globe. A total of 12 teams have been announced that include cities in Europe, Canada and the United States. What has been interesting around this is that many of the traditional team brands have now separated and are not all visible with the new franchises and names have changed. In addition, the franchising has caused what must be the largest changes of team rosters seen in Call of Duty since the competitive scene had begun. Considering the supposed millions of dollars invested into the franchises and players, the stage is being set for an explosive year of competitive Call of Duty!
