Will BREXIT be a coin collectors dream?

I'll try and keep my own political view out of this blog, but whether you voted LEAVE or REMAIN, the dice has be rolled and land where it may.

As a numismatic (coin collector), regardless of what happens after the 31st of January, I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a few of the new "Brexit coins"

It was revealed last year that a commemorative 50 pence coin had been commissioned by the government to mark the date of the UKs departure from the European Union (EU). The original departure date has been extended on numerous occasions, and so the date the coin was to be released has be held back to match.

This is the expected design of the new coin, with the original date of departure - 29th March 2019

Well that didn't go to plan, so they changed the design again:

Production of a previous coin was halted when Britain missed the 31 October Brexit deadline due to wrangling in parliament over how to leave.

The delay meant about a million coins had to be melted down and the metal put aside until the new departure date was confirmed to be JANUARY 31st.

The latest 50 pence coin will be inscribed with the EU exit date of 31 January, and the words "peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations".

After a meeting of the Privy Council a few week ago, the Queen issued a proclamation that new “gold, silver and cupro-nickel coins” will be minted with the updated departure date of January 31, and this has got me all excited. This coin will be struck in cupronickel UNC for circulation to the general public and in silver and gold proof condition for collector’s market.

This news has got me all excited, because not only do I think that these precious metal versions will be "rare" with a low mintage figure, but because of the historical nature they represent, they could go up in value dramatically.

I will definitely be queuing at the Royal Mint, the day they get released, to pick up as many silver (and possibly a few gold) ones as I can afford.

Would love to see what they can come up to encapsulate and commemorate the Brexit circus show.

Lucky that you live close enough to queue up! I'll be watching to see if any make it to the secondary market in the coming years...
