# 724 - 21st Century Type Set - Part 6

avatar

A 21st-century type coin set consists of one coin bearing each design produced by the United States Mint during the 21st century. That is an enormous number of coins (commemoratives, state quarters, ATB quarters, Sacagawea dollars, etc) in both circulated/uncirculated and proof finishes. We must not forget the material of the coins like clad, silver, gold, copper, platinum, etc.

The NGC type coin registry takes the one type coin for the series approach. Therefore that is only one State Quarter, one America the Beautiful Quarter, one Sacagawea Dollar and one Presidential Dollar required. They only consider coins that were meant for circulation, so no commemoratives and no gold or platinum coins.

I decided to collect a NGC-like 21st century type coin set but, looking always for perfection, my collection is made only by PR-70 coins.

Let's show it, in order of value and year of each coin.

The sixth is a PR-70 2013-S Lincoln Shield Cent.

It was made of 97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper and weights 2.5g.

The info below comes from https://lincolncents.net/lincoln-shield-cent/

"The Lincoln Shield Cent was issued following the four different designs issued for the 2009 Lincoln Cents to celebrate the Bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth. The same legislation which authorized the four rotating reverse designs also specified a fifth design to be issued in the following year, which would be emblematic of Lincoln’s preservation of the United States of America as a single and united country."

NGC graded 2,631 2013-S 1 cent "Shield" Proofs, with 413 as PF-70 RD UC. 1,237,926 coins were minted in San Francisco in 2013.

I bought this coin in 2013 for $51.00 and today's price is around $65.00.

"The reverse design features the Union Shield, which dates back to the 1780’s and was used widely during the Civil War. The shield includes thirteen vertical stripes joined by an upper horizontal bar. This represents the thirteen original states joined together in a single compact union in support of the federal government."

It was designed by Lyndall Bass and Joseph Menna.

The obverse, showing the portrait in right profile of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States from 1861 to 1865, was designed by Victor David Brenner.

2013 marks the 50th year since the assassination of JFK, I remember because that was the year I visited his grave at the Arlington Cemetery.

This could be any year after 2009. I bought it in 2013 and that was the year's Proof coin.
