Introduction

Education is that valuable process in which human beings have been trained for a long time to learn the knowledge that leads us to live our deepest realities in a world that demands professionals diversified in knowledge in general, however within this knowledge continues to dominate the mathematical knowledge.

The processes of teaching mathematics once our students make that leap from initial and middle basic education to higher education are truncated by a culture shock in the way mathematics is taught and learned in high schools to how it should be taught and learned in our universities.

We may encounter apathetic students who want to adapt to a new conception of learning. There are also teacher colleagues who are reluctant to want to change the way they teach, in which it is necessary to have a more critical and analytical vision than that which is available for teaching in basic and secondary education.

In this rather negative context we cannot blame either students or teachers, since in my critical perspective I think it is the education system that has led us to this mediocre conception of the teaching and learning of mathematics in our universities.

The objective of this article is to give you a series of reflections and considerations based mostly on my educational experiences with regard to the teaching of mathematics and infinitesimal calculus, in which I also involved some conceptions of student learning based on the monitoring I have seen in terms of their performance and abilities to learn mathematics.

Is it necessary to innovate in the way we teach mathematics?

From experience I can tell you that it is very normal to teach mathematics under a rather traditional approach, in which basically we as teachers arrive at the classroom and when we are about to give the class we do so by complying with the following process:

[1] A brief introduction to the topic: at this point we almost always focus on starting, for example, with the description and explanation of some theorem that complements us to teach the students why a certain equation is used in the application of some particular calculation.

[2] Theoretical foundation: it is necessary to support and strengthen all the theoretical foundations on which a certain mathematical topic is based, that is why it is most likely that many of us will start as the second part of the class giving the theoretical foundations that support the topic that we are going to explain.

[3] Exercise to proposed problems: as many aspects of the real life, it is necessary to know if those theoretical concepts serve us to solve some determined problem, it is for it that as third entry we take part in solving to the students a series of proposed exercises that give us a severity that the theoretical foundations have been correctly transferred and applied to the resolution of the exercises.

Everything up to this point seems normal and very common, even many of our students copy all these notes, going from the introductory part, theoretical foundations and solved exercises. Then the everyday of this learning process is that students complement trying to solve many more exercises proposed by books or exercise guides.

Where is the problem then?

I don't disagree with this methodology, even in this form I explain my classes. However, there comes a point where the system and the teaching-learning process become very monotonous, and it is appropriate to enter into a process of innovation of the input elements to approach a mathematics class in the classroom, above all taking into consideration that we are in a process of breaking the paradigms of basic and secondary education.

What if someone wants to get off the beaten track and look for another approach to that teaching and learning process?

It would be great if someone could break the monotony, regularly it could be our students who propose new scenarios to break with that classical paradigm of learning mathematics, and although the teacher continues to teach the classes in the same classical way he already took the first revolutionary steps to try to change at least with the models of learning.

What should we teachers do if this happens?

I believe that we must accept the primary changes, at least accept the new forms of learning that students adopt. What we must do is guide them in this process in which they adapt to new forms, always making it clear to them that there are theoretical and practical foundations within mathematics that should not be misinterpreted, in which perhaps if they are modified considerably they can learn the basic and advanced foundations of the various topics under study.

What is sought when we as teachers let new initiatives be taken by students?

There is no doubt that when we allow new learning initiatives in the student, what we are promoting in them is their investigative spirit, since they do not conform to what we as teachers teach them.

If we take into account that a great part of the knowledge that all human beings acquire is practically fed by observation and experimentation, then we should encourage the student to find new ways of learning, and also to look for new links to tie in those new mathematical knowledge learned and to apply them in real cases focused on their professional profile.

Where is the innovative role of the teacher in the teaching of mathematics?

If we understand innovation as that process in which change and improvement are generated, we could then say that the role that the teacher must play when teaching mathematics, is one in which all possible changes can be generated to generate a teaching that is up to generating in the math student a really significant learning.

If we as teachers of mathematics manage to establish this innovative form of teaching, we will even be able to add more strategies for our classes, others that can complement the three phases explained above, such as: introduction, theoretical foundations and exercise.

If we manage to get new innovative elements to our math classes, more students will be able to acquire meaningful learning very easily, as the student will surely find motivating reasons to learn.

Within this innovative role it is very necessary to achieve a teaching-learning process outside the classroom, although it seems a rather complex exercise because it is mathematics, leaving classes we can for example explain how the volume of a tank, in which we involve the student in taking his measurements and taking this data back to the classroom where the theoretical principles for the calculation of said volume will be executed.

When we execute these types of actions we are innovating and at the same time evaluating the results of the learning acquired by the students.

Conclusions and considerations

Many times as teachers in mathematics we think we are teaching well, but if we reflect and evaluate the performance that our students are having based on their learning, perhaps we will realize that we need to innovate our strategies based on the results of assessments in student learning.

A very appropriate way is to characterize mathematical knowledge to the physical and natural environment of the place where certain mathematical principles and fundamentals are taught. That is why it is essential to investigate initiatives that involve student learning with the natural phenomena of their environment.

If the teacher's innovative ideas are on track, initiatives will most likely emerge to invite students to experiment with the knowledge acquired, in which they can be introduced with the conceptual theories that have been previously taught and used in mathematics according to their observations, and in this way not having to fall into contradictions with the student's learning, not only the contradictions, but surely both student and teacher will be experiencing changes in favor, where new ideas focused on the innovation of the teaching-learning process of mathematics can emerge.
