Looking forward to experience the Thai Life and some fears along the way

I'm in Mordor - some haters will say it's the Vancouver airport and I'm just exaggerating the cold, the fog and the red Dawn - and the sun is just coming up. This is the last time I see the sun rise on this side of the world; tomorrow - or should I say the day after tomorrow, since one full day will completely vanish from my life - I will be seeing the sun rise on the old Continent.

It's my first time in Asia. I'm not going to say I'm nervous because at this point in my life I can say that, luckily and gratefully, I've my fair share of long distance and longer term travels; but what I can say is that I'm excited, perhaps more excited than I've ever been in the past 3-4 years.

Why, you ask?

Well, for those who don't know me, I've been traveling on and off over the past three years. I'm a low budget long term traveler, but I wasn't always like this.

Back in 2011 I was living in Playa del Carmen back when that it was exactly in that small town that regarding backpack traveling it was happening, meaning that every low budget backpacker and solo traveler knew that was the place to go while traveling through America.

I met a lot of people during those three months I spent working at a hostel, partying every day, lighting up the grill and exploring the Mayan Riviera. These people opened my eyes and changed the way I used to see the world and how I interact with it and the people that inhabit it. And I decided that one day, no matter what, I had to experience a long as fuck travel adventure. And I would write about it. Each and every moment of it.

This dreamed Odyssey had just one single place defined: Borneo, in South East Asia. I didn't care where I went, as long as at one point my feet ended up leading me to that island in Indonesia.

It's been three years and I haven't been able to visit South East Asia. Not because I don't want to, buy because I never had the money, the time or the balls to entourage on that side of the world.

Until I heard that Steem Fest 4 was to be celebrated in Thailand

I knew that somehow I had to go. Kill two birds with one stone if you may. This will be my 3rd Steem Fest and I wouldn't miss it for anything and, if at the same time I can cross the most important part of my bucket list well, it's a no brainier.

So then, I began to wonder what I want to visit when I go to Thailand. Before moving on to Indonesia I want to explore Thailand, at least for the meager 15 days that my short term visa allows it.

So, if I had to make a list about what do I want to do in Bangkok, which is one of the #roadtosteemfest writing prompts, I would narrow it down to 5 items or experiences:

  • Island hoping. But not the posh style, I want to do it my style. Hitchhiking boat rides, sleeping on the beach, fishing and gathering my own food and most importantly, do all of that without worrying about anything else.
  • Eat all the Thai food there is. No kidding. It's like my Mexican stomach was made for this. Just like Hulk's gamma radiation origins allows him to undo Thanos's snap, my Montezuma's curse free stomach allows me to eat whatever the hell I want, and I'm going to embrace this chance and eat all the Thai food I find in front of me.
  • Explore the hidden side of Bangkok. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to have a ladyboy experience or something like that. But I do want to walk those streets and see how the general environment regarding that dark side of Bangkok is.
  • Experience the hostel life / party night life Bangkok and Thailand in general promises. I already partied in central America, the US, west, central and Eastern Europe and there are rumors that say that South East Asian nightlife has no match, perhaps the Caribbean one is the only one that resembles it. But I want to experience it for myself.
  • Get in a fight. Again, don't get me wrong. I'm not a bully and I don't like getting in fights. I don't actively search for them and I definitely try to avoid them at all costs. But it seems like they follow me around. I've gotten in a fight on every continent and subcontinent I've visited - most of the times it wasn't my fault by the way - so what the hell, let's make it a worldwide kind of thing. At least I'll have a story for my grandkids about how grandpa kicked some ass - or got his ass kicked - on every corner of the world.

Which brings me to my Fears list

  • There's one thing that every nomad fears, and that is liking a place - or someone - so much that you end up deciding to leave the wanderer life behind and settle. I want to settle eventually but, that doesn't take away the slight fear of saying this is it, I'm staying here and I know that SEA has the power to make me choose that path.
  • Someone planting some drugs in me. I don't do drugs so I have little to no experience on that area, and I read that carrying, using or making drugs is punished by law with a death sentence. If you've seen my traveling posts I don't care about risking my life in exchange of a good ol' adventure but I don't want to do it just because of a misunderstanding.
  • Losing my passport. When you drop your guard is when bad things happen. I recently lost my US visa because I was careless and stupid; I don't want to drop my guard again and this time losing or getting my passport stolen.

That's it. No more fears. No more tears (Ozzy Osborne reference.

What about you? Did you already wrote your road to Steem Fest Posts? You still have time! check out this post.

Thank you everyone who makes a post about this. Any vote or resteem is appreciated, since all the liquid rewards from this post will go to fund one lucky Steemian's Steem Fest 4 entry ticket.

Hahaha “get in a fight” huh?!
As long as you don’t get heavily beaten, a couple punches are good enough I hope 😂

Enjoy every minute of your stay man! :)

Dude, we gotta eat from every single street vendor there is. Spoiler alert: we will probably die trying, because they're around every corner. It's amazing.

Don't forget the cockroaches - you must eat the cockroaches.
And crickets.
And fermented fish slops. yum.
