Hard Fork Day: Steem-Engine

avatar

Today is the day we see the hard fork of Steem-Engine. At 8:00 tonight (I presume that is Eastern Time), the platform will be forked. This will provide some exciting updates that users and communities will enjoy.

One of the goals of SCOT, which was designed after the SMT concept, was to give people the ability to create "mini-Steems". Anyone now can set up a token and have it act similar to the Steem platform.

Well, not exactly. There are a few differences which were picked up. Those are now being added to the new code.

Delegation

One of the nice features of Steem is the ability to delegate Steem Power. This gives larger accounts the ability to help smaller ones by direct delegation. We also see applications using this to grow their position by garnering SP in exchange for their native tokens. Steem Power is a very handy feature that sparked a great deal of creativity when coupled with the upvote.

Any token created on Steem-Engine will have the ability to be delegated. Of course, the staking process must be done (powering up).

Decimal Places

The world of cryptocurrency teaches us a lot about decimal points. In the world of USD, we see two used. With Bitcoin, the currency going out 8 places. Tokens created on Steem-Engine, are whole numbers.

This is going to be corrected. The code is adding the ability for token creators to provide decimal places with their currency. So instead of having 1 PAL, it will be possible to have 1.026 PAL. From what I understand, this can be changed but it is one way. You can go from 2 decimal places to four, but not the reverse.

Here is a write up that @aggroed put out a few days ago.

I like what I see out of this team. It is as if they are throwing caution to the wind and proceeding without a road map. What I mean by that, while I am sure there are ideas about what they want to add, they are being flexible and altering course as they get feedback. Many questioned why the no decimal points and now there is an answer.

The supermind idea means that the entire platform is smarter than any one or few individuals on it. When a team takes the feedback it receives and honestly assesses it, things can grow at a quicker pace. None of us have all the answers. Being deaf to the wishes of your community never ends well. This is especially true with technology that is open source since people can just go and do their own thing.

When teams (or individuals) get rigid about the path they are taking with start ups, bad things can happen. I am happy to see the Steem-Engine team truly have the "community" mindset. This is our project even if one is not directly holding those particular tokens. Since it is built upon Steem, each of us who holds any SP benefits. All the platforms are part of the larger ecosystem.

With each passing week, we are seeing more things developed on this blockchain. While it is still not known outside those of us using it, that does not mean the value is not growing. It is. Our daily efforts are having an impact upon what is taking place here. Each of us had a role to play in pushing this forward.

As the opportunities expand, people are going to have even more choices as to where they want to focus their attention. We are already seeing groups form around the many ideas and topics we see on a daily basis. This is only going to grow as time passes.

The ability to delegate Steem-Engine tokens will add another interesting twist. I look forward to seeing some of the creativity applied to that by communities. This provides a lot more flexibility to the token which should result in some intriguing ideas.

Onward and upward gang.

Thanks for the info. There is so much going on and once every “new thing” is put into active use we learn “new things” and if we are wise we use this info to build something better. That’s what I see here. I am impressed with this team also.

I'm not sure I understand what's going on here but I hope it'll ultimately make things a little less complicated. Like, newcomers interested in basket-weaving can join a basket-weaving community supported by a b.w. token? It would be refreshing to have a way to encourage content other than writing about Steem and Steemit.

Until things settle down to the point where they can be explained to a layman who might want to talk about something else, I don't think we can see much long-term growth around here.

Exactly this. Many of us love Steem because we use it all day and we like to speculate on its future, but to attract a wider audience, we must have communities that talk about other things and have a seamless experience that is “enhanced” by Steem rather than bringing their focus to Steem.

I think the idea of tribes that Steem Engine is creating is exactly that seamless connection. A basket weaving enthusiast will one day go to a basket weaving condenser front end and not even know a damn thing about Steem. All they’ll know is that they’re joining a community about basket weaving that pays some crypto to its users.

You hit the nail on the head. The basket-weaving community can support those interested in that with a b.w. token. Thus, each time an upvote is given, one will earn SP/SBD AND BW.

That is the entire idea behind "Tribes" that the team is working on. They want to give communities the opportunity to create a website and have different social media functions (blogging, live stream, video, forum) all under one umbrella.

Right now Steemit is very silent about the Steem-Engine and the long wait for SMT...
