Proposal #10 - DevPortal Documentation Update - New Pull Requests

avatar

This week, I have four new pull request for Steemit, Inc. to merge:

  • PR#421 - Glossary Changes
  • PR#422 - API Definitions Update
  • PR#423 - Plugin / API List Update
  • PR#424 - New Recipe: Setting Up a Testnet

Of these, the "Setting Up a Testnet" recipe was the most time consuming to work on. It's a "Quick Start" document on deploying your own testnet on whatever version of steemd you want. I say "Quick Start" in quotes because it's ~300 lines of text to do something that a single Docker command can do.

But not everybody is familiar with Docker. And sometimes it's just nice to know how to do something without Docker.

If you want to take a look at these changes before Steemit, Inc. merges them, you can find them all here:

Setting Up a Testnet

You can check out the "Setting Up a Testnet" tutorial here:

https://inertia186.github.io/devportal/tutorials-recipes/setting-up-a-testnet

Unlike my tintoy docker command which only initializes a tiny 2,000 account testnet, following this tutorial allows you to create a full-sized testnet with all of the accounts that exist on the mainnet.

Even though the intent is to create a full-sized testnet, I also wanted to make sure this tutorial did not require high-end hardware.

For these reason, it took a few extra hours to fully verify the steps. But this also lead to a few helpful troubleshooting items, so I'm confident if you really want to run a testnet like this, you'll be able to.

While the toy version is great for rapid iteration, if you want more realistic, long-lived testnet to work with, this tutorial is the way to go.

Moar docs!!

Thanks man, so glad this got approved.

When I first got on Steem, I was so damn frustrated I couldn't find a damn thing and I didn't get much help from anyone. Documentation was way worse than it is now. Most of the only documenation we have I believe was from when you worked at Steemit.
