My Top 5 Dead Card Games!

With breaks I have been playing Magic the Gathering for 22 years now and have always returned to the market leader.

Today I would like to talk about my Top 5 Trading Card Games, which are no longer produced and therefore dead.

Place 5 :The Simpsons -Sammelkartenspiel-

Let's start with a game that was developed in Germany and was supplied with boosters from 2001 to 2003. In 2003 the license for the Simpsons went to Wizard of the Coast and they started their own game.

I have to admit that I can't really remember what the exact rules were, but I had a good Lisa and a good Horror Deck :)

I also remember that a Flanders Deck played many "counter spells"

. There were 7 different characters Bart, Lisa, Homer, Flanders, Krusty, Horror and Burns. The wiki says that there are only 6, but I am sure there was a Burns deck!

The game has brought it in the 2 years to 3 expansions after all :Horror, Krusty and Sports.

Place 4: Rage -Werwolf the Apocalypse Trading Card Game-

It must have been 1997 when I first held cards of Rage in my hand. At first I bought the cards just to have pictures for my pen and paper rounds. Later I started playing Rage with my good friend Thomas.

The goal of the game was to reach 30 Renown, and this was achieved either by killing the werewolves of the opponent, or by killing Spirits, or by rites.

When a werewolf took enough damage it turned into Crinos and the card was flipped over and then used again. Besides the Spirits and the werewolves there were equipment cards, gift cards, ride cards and combat cards.

I still remember that the cards were a bit thicker than the ones from Magic.

Place 3: World of Warcraft Trading Card Game

At that time I was tournament organizer in the local store for Magic the Gathering and my first cards were from the 10 cent box in the store. I started playing the game to be able to play with some friends from time to time.

The game was very similar to Magic and yet it also had its own mechanics. So you did not have the feeling to play a Magic copy.

Of course I bought Booster for the reason to draw some code cards for Wow. The Spectral-Tiger was traded for 700 to 900 € if the code was not used yet :) The game was discontinued in favor of Hearthstone 2013 .

Upper Deck : Vs System

In 2004 a game was released that made the dreams of every comic fan come true. Finally in one game you could find out who was stronger Spiderman or Batman or any other charackter from the DC or Marvel universe.

I can still remember exactly how enthusiastic I was about it and even ordered single Cards from the USA because they were not available in Germany.

The goal was to rob the opponent of his 50 stamina points. To achieve this you could play cards from both the DC and Marvel universe in one deck.

The game was discontinued in 2009. In 2015 Marvel Origins was released, which was based on VS system without DC cards, but this has been discontinued as far as I know. Without DC cards there was no real VS Feeling

Place 1: TsR- Spellfire-

Spellfire was my first trading card game and I can't remember exactly how I financed it when I was 17 years old.

At that time I was playing a lot of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons and it was just fun to conquer territories with the heroes from the novels and it felt kind of epic when Tanis went into battle with Lord Soth to defend Neverwinter :)

Until 1996 I even took part in one or the other tournament, but was only semi successful. In 1998 I sold all my cards, because I did not play Spellfire or AD&D. Today I wish that I had kept the cards and hope that there will be some day a Living Card Game of Spellfire.

I hope you enjoyed reading about dead card games as much as I enjoyed writing this post :)

obwohl ich warcraft fan der ersten Stunde war, wusste ich, dass aus dem Kartenspiel nichts werden würde.
