Failing at my own Challenge: Day 5 MILK CHALLENGE

avatar

Crying over spilled milk.

Hey Milkers, Circle-Jerkers, Downvoters, Sincere Users, Content Snobs and Disillusioned Steemians.

It's official, I did not make a post yesterday, thus failing my own challenge. :)

I'm still going to make a post today. I've been engaging and it's been a lot of fun to see where the #MilkandTators #milkandtaters have freed some people up to make a post.

Why do I want engagement and activity?

Because most internet sites are judged by activity and number of active users. It has always been my position that limiting our end-users to quality content creators limits activity and stifles users. As you can clearly see I am not a writer and I don't want to be. Many do not have the desire or interest in creating long, beautifully formatted posts. That doesn't mean we shouldn't reward those who do, but it is the Internet, and some goofing around is fine too.

Many reasonable people could make a case for Quality Content or just engagement and fun. It is just a difference in point of view, vision and likely skill sets. No need to demonize the other point of view.

Name recognition and networks matter, it isn't all about the content and I can assure you hardly anyone is sitting around reading all the posts and trying to reward them based on the quality. We know that people have a tendency to support who and what they like. Clearly visibility is also part of getting followers and votes, and that is part of the reason I am encouraging you to go comment on some other people's posts! So, they get to know your name!

I had an interesting conversation on Twitter with an end-user who wanted to participate in the beta and thought he would need a different account for each front end.

I hadn't thought about the idea that many may not understand the difference in the blockchain and accessing it via different front-ends. So, a quick note, you username and keys will allow you to interact with most of the front-ends on Steem. Steemit.com and Steempeak.com are both updating the same Steem Blockchain. The only difference is where you log in and how you view and interact with the data in the chain. While you can have more than one account for various activities, it is not a requirement. I strongly recommend setting up KeyChain.

Also a quick comment on Downvotes, if you want to help normalize them, try not calling people names and being shitty while you give them out. If you dislike downvotes that's understandable, but the upvote and downvote are built into the blockchain and both serve a purpose. That doesn't mean everyone uses them well. Every post on Steem is open for 1 week, the community gets to react to your post with upvotes and downvotes and at the end of the week you keep the balance.

Regardless of whether or not you like downvotes they are programmed into the blockchain and they will be used and sometimes poorly.

I've seen some of the oldest accounts rush out to make a post justifying their downvotes or complaining about a downvote they received. That's not helping.

There are basically three ways to react to a post:

  1. Upvote
  2. Ignore
  3. Downvote

I view it like this, upvote what you think is good for Steem, ignore what is neutral and downvote what you think is harmful. (Everyone has different opinions)

Yes, I know several of you are going to tell me about a "bad downvote" you received. Yes, I agree some people use their downvotes in ways I disagree with, but it is their stake and they are allowed to make good or bad decisions with what they do with it.

Oh look a burning potato gif, how fun!

I can assure you hardly anyone is sitting around reading all the posts and trying to reward them based on the quality.

I am. **Sticks hand up shyly

And I know people who are too.

Man, I stressed out all day that I had nothing to write about to uphold #milkandtaters and the muse came to me very last minute, I was quite pleased. to think I was going to have to give up and let you down - sheesh.

Downvotes - meh, whatever. There's trollsquitos, which is my new name for them. Trolls, coz of nasty intentions, and mosquitos. I get so bored of hearing about them. I do reassure newbies who maybe have got a downvote though. But it shouldn't be as crushing as all that.

I appeciate your candor and humor :)

Not to sound bratty, but I have been posting, daily, and leaving comments as much as my poor little brain can handle.

I would be grateful if you could help me get more eyes on today’s post, on Middle East Peace, a subject dear to my heart:

Oh, I do hope you find more engagement. I don't have any opinions on the Middle East, the whole thing confuses me terribly!

Just keep on trying, I made 96 posts that didn't earn a thing when I was starting out!

Thanks, for your kind words of encouragement. The Middle East is confusing even to us who are from there!

Yes, trying every day (for over 2 years, now). Some days are better than others :)

Like they say, no need to cry over spilt milk. So the saying goes, ya just get a mop, mop it up, and pour another glass. (day 5 post). So you stumbled stubbed you your big toe while sleepily wandering back to the couch with your milk, you still made another post.

About which:

There are basically three ways to react to a post:

  • 4. make one heck of a killer comment that may end up with option 1, 2, or 3, on it., or even option 4.

I was gonna say -- comment comment is number 4..

I like the way you put it.. comment, cause a chain reaction of voting downvoting and further comments in an endless cycle to infinity...

I started late, but so far I've made 3 posts in 3 days. 2 of those were pure milk though and I feel dirty treating Steem that way so I'm working on upping the quality of my #milkandtators. Since I'm having fun in VR at the moment, I figured tomorrow I'll try and start uploading a playthrough of a VR game as my milk and take my time to grow create some potatoes better content.

I saw that downvote thread and your discussion with the author within, and I agree that you cannot account for the total randomness of people. Some downdoots just aren't going to make any sense and it's best to just duck your head down and move on. People are weird. I'm sure when I get hit by my first big downvote I'm going to be upset, but I won't be making a post about it. I do worry that it could be used to brigade people off the platform over trivial things but I feel like if that was what was happening more people would be concerned about it.

Thanks for participating! I think it is great you are defining what level of Milking works for you.

some of the downvotes are targeted and it's a shame, but there is little to be done about it.

I get downvoted often, I don't like it.. I accept it.

Since the beginning of the SE tribes I decided that the best way wasn't the creation of a different account for each tribe. An SE tribe has the potential of having value but for me the most important is the steem token. I have a lot of followers but some of them decided to reward me only with tribe tokens, which is ok thought, but I don't think it is the way to encourage people anyway. My percentage of vote is equally the same on all tribes as it is on steem.

I think holding a lot of tribe tokens is "Getting in Early". Like the early Steem users.

So you missed a Post yesterday. Well do two today. And yes I agree with engagement not always mean having to be well formatted prose and fancy pancy verbiage.

Fun is fun no matter who or where you are ;)

You're a pretty good writer @whatsup … It is always/usually clear what you're trying to convey.

I read this post with interest, as well.

You forgot the fourth way to engage with a post...

"Nice post, deer" something something something hashtag milk - the only thing I'm milking here is the resource credit pool, and a fragment of your time, which you'll never get back, in fact, I also won't get the time back it took to write this...

TLDR, All existence is futile? :D

I have no problem writing any article. But I do not know if I managed to write ten comments every day since the beginning of the call. But I'm sure one day. I'm having a good time :-).

I discovered #milkandtators and #milkandtaters through my brother-in-law, @preparedwombat. I often forget to look at the post tags, but just happened to notice those. Love it. I wish I had seen this challenge at the beginning, because I post daily!

I agree with you that sites are judged by volume and activity, and we need a lot more activity on Steem. There's a balance. Writing a three sentence post to just to post something is ridiculous and unless it's the most amazing haiku should not be rewarded in any grand fashion. But it's really not hard to write a thoughtful post on a regular basis.

On the multi-front-end situation....

So, a quick note, you username and keys will allow you to interact with most of the front-ends on Steem. Steemit.com and Steempeak.com are both updating the same Steem Blockchain. The only difference is where you log in and how you view and interact with the data in the chain.

We somehow need to get more education out about this!

If someone makes a post with 3 lines, and shares something I find interesting I will vote appropriately with a small vote. I don't see the problem.

I love preparedwombat he has always been on of my favorite Steemians, he is an excellent writer, which I envy and a calm, classy guy.

Maybe I should do a weekly beginners tips post? Each week focus on a few tips and facts.

Yes, those weekly tips would be awesome! And maybe we can get an app developer to figure out a way to index and organize them. One of the challenges I see with our distributed model is the lack of a “hub” where all of a person’s questions can be answered. So it’s hard work to be here. You need to search everywhere, ask for personalized help on Discord (which is one-off instruction) and muddle through. Some of us who are relatively intelligent will never actually master this thing or do really well at it because the hurdles to success just seem exhausting. You can’t just be a dedicated, caring Steemian. You have to be wily and try many different strategies, which means you need lots of time, curiosity and motivation.... Many people just don’t have all that in the abundance needed. I’m not complaining. Love it here. But I do see opportunities to improve Steem’s success.

I like that description of @preparedwombat — “calm and classy.” I agree. 😁
