Narrative - a Steem Competitor - Suffers a Premature Death
Life isn't easy for most Crypto projects right now. While many of the projects in the top 100 of Coin Market Cap are nothing more than roulette chips for short term gamblers to bet on, without a project nor a team to back them up... some real projects end up facing a premature death.
Today I woke up to the news that Narrative - called by many a "Steem Killer" - is already shutting down its doors.
Reading about it, it seemed like a good competitor and competition is always good in a Free Market. It forces competitors to step up their game. Narrative seemed like a good proposition, with a lot of clever ideas and mechanisms.
However, it was very short lived. I registered at the site, just to check it out, but I didn't even tried it... and now it seems pointless to do it, since it's closing down, leaving everyone who invested in the dust.
Meanwhile, Steem is still kicking and screaming but with some of the Top Witnesses doing nothing but damage to the platform, with their crazy ideas (Free Downvotes, a SPS Funding System which doesn't really fund anything, etc...), and other Witnesses working as hard as they possibly can to move us forward, I wonder if we'll face the same destiny. 🤔
I sure hope not, since I enjoy blogging on this site and I've met a lot of cool people along the way, some of whom even help me with my adventure of learning Russian (yeah, I mean you, @apnigrich and @singa - спасибо большое за помощь). 😊
I really hope the Top Witnesses get on the same page and start working together to make sure Steem is not going to be thrown under a bus.
But I also don't like to see the competition die without a fight. Without any platform to compete with, the incentives to improve are non-existent. And that's not good at all.
I've heard that Voice is getting ready to kick off a beta version... will it be the competitor that will force us to step up our game? I'm not too confident. In fact, I'm less confident in Voice than I was in Narrative... and that one is already history.

I couldn't agree more.
Steem is decentralized, even if Steemit inc shut its doors the blockchain will still run and devs will still build. I think we are in the clear, the blockchain itself has value albeit from the community. While the data is on chain, most Steem DApps render from GitHub— so we avoid hosting costs as much as possible.

I registered in narrative also, I wasn't a fan of there because I don't know. It feel's like I'm not enjoying there. I shared images but after I shared it here. So sad they're closing it..

Great read buddy,
I've never used narrative (however I've seen it several times) so I'm not very aware of their token economy.
My strong impression is that most projects out there do not have well thought through economy and tokens are being distributed left and right (often to parties, which do not intend to hold to those tokens).
It's quite sad that Narrative didn't make it. It seem that social media platforms build on blockchain have no idea how to survive (hopefully steemit will). Unfortunatelly it's a huge challenge to sustain this kind of business without us (users) being a product and our attention being sold to advertisers . Wouldn't you agree?
If not ads - then where money would be coming from to reward all those who participate? Noone so far seem to come up with solid answer (neither did STINC).
Personally I don't think I would ever register there simply because of KYC requirement. That's a huge put off. Anyway I wish them all the best.

Well, I'm afraid we aren't completely free of that over here, as well. I'm pretty sure that you have noticed that, even though there are no official guidelines or rules at Steem, a few Self-Appointed Police Officers have been enforcing their own rules, whether the rest of us like it or not... it's their money, their rules.
Personally, I think that is a big problem for this Blockchain because now we are not free. No, we're not free at all. We're all being held hostage by a few rich people who seem to think they own the platform.
As long as we don't have a solution for that, I don't think Steem will be able to go mainstream.
If a handful of people can force the rest of us to submit to their rules, just because they have money, this Blockchain is not much better than a dictatorship. 🤦♂️

What do you mean? Steemit doesn't seem to require much of our data.
And to tell you the truth, perhaps I wouldn't mind going through KYC with Voice if I would learn to trust this platform. But how do they expect people to provide all those sensitive data up-front.
My impression is that KYC should be enforced only in case of withdrawing funds. Not earlier.
