Minnows on the up, dolphins and orcas too

avatar

We continue our monitoring of the numbers of people on the various marine creature levels of Steem. The stats from @arcange help with this.

Stats

Over the last six months Steem has gained four whales. That is impressive and shows people are prepared to invest in the platform. I have not checked if any of them are currently powering down.

The number of orcas has fluctuated a bit. It is only up eleven on six months, but it dipped and we have actually gained about twenty in the last month. These are accounts that can give out substantial votes whilst earning nicely from curation. Having more of them increases the chances of votes being distributed more widely. I do realise that some losses at each level are due to people moving up, but we would hope for a steady stream coming from below to compensate.

Dolphins have seen almost continual growth with almost two hundred more in half a year. The low Steem price has been a big factor in this as it may only cost around £500 to get to this level.

The number of minnows is more or less the same as six months ago. It has been over a hundred higher, but struggles to maintain growth. I think people at this level may get frustrated by lack of rewards and the hardfork may not have helped much as they cannot earn too much from curation.

Steem needs a steady influx of new users to help it grow and to compensate for those who give up on it. If we find new users who are struggling we ought to give them a hand as long as they are doing good things. We need them to be telling their friends that Steem is worth joining. They may even invest in a little Steem. You can get to minnow level for what some of spend on a tank of fuel or a weekly food shop.

If you are a dolphin, orca or whale then please consider sponsoring some small accounts with automatic votes or delegation. This requires some trust, but you can keep an eye on them. There will be some who try to exploit the platform, but the community is dealing with many of those now. We are not against everyone having a chance to earn, but buying votes for profit and using fake accounts are detrimental to the ethos of Steem. Growth should be through community appreciation.

It is in the interest of every one of us for Steem to grow. It spreads the rewards thinner, but more adoption ought to make Steem more valuable. It is languishing in the lower regions of the crypto charts when a coin with this much utility ought to be at least in the top twenty. We can sacrifice some short term gains for a better future.

Steem on!

How many active users are there who have yet to reach 'minnow'?

According to that chart about 300,000, but we know only a few thousand are really active. Over a million inactive accounts, but a lot of those are fake. We need to build up from the bottom. For now it's all fairly stagnant. Any ideas on how we can encourage people to join? I've tried all I can.

Ahh... I thought the first column was minnows. Fair 'nuff. The whole fake account thing is weird, but never mind.
As for getting people to join - wish I knew. It would help if there was a good, intuitive phone app. The fact that there's competing offers rather than one single combined effort is a bit confusing. Most users don't care about the underlying framework of their applications. I bet there's a hell of a lot of people who don't know there's a difference between android, windows and ios. They'll just be looking at the brand of phone. The same with Steem - that's not going to matter to the average punter. A great application that give them the social network they want is going to be the answer.
Which I accept is not a helpful answer, but it shifts the question.
Maybe target one particular 'tribe' - there's always a push to get creative types onto Steem, but the acknowledgement that no-one's buying much doesn't help.
That said, one of my tribes is board game players, who use boardgame geek as the web site of choice. Create a steem-driven app that allows games to be logged easily onto bgg.com and has social cohesion so that, for e.g. My games tonight can be compared with other games being played. Add photos, players stats etc. The idea that playing board games in the real world will earn bitcoins may be a selling point.
Grab each tribe with the app they want and that might help bring them aboard.

The diversity of apps is a strength and a weakness. There needs to be some sort of uniting brand, which should probably be Steem. It is not always obvious that the apps are using it. It is a strength in that people can find one to suit them. The existing 'tribes' cover a few topics. SteemAce has tags for tabletop games, but there is not much there. Maybe you can try getting something on there with the appropriate tags. These sort of communities need a few keen people to get them started.

Maybe @steem-ace could add features like high score and league tables.

If you know anyone who wants a Steem account to try it then just let me know and I can do it.
