Paid attention to engagement?

Which kind of content do you engage with the most, is there a genre or topic that tends to not only grab more of your attention but also attracts more of your effort?

While in the past comments (even with all the farming abuse) only took about 1.5% of the rewards pool and after the latest Hardfork, most don't vote on comments at all. Some people are disappointed by this of course, but if it was never a big earner anyway, why are the comment votes so necessary?

I wonder this because while it is gemreat to get paid to comment, if the content is enjoyable, engaging and useful to you, wouldn't commenting be part of the experience? This is even more true when there is a chance to interact with the creator directly and discuss the topic further.

by the way in my opinion, if your favourite authors don't answer at least some of their comments often enough, don't feel obliged to vote after reading. But also, don't feel they should answer all either.

I have answered nearly all of the real comments I have received because I think that if my audience cares enough to take the time on my content, I should care enough to answer them. I reserve the right not to answer though.

So, has your commenting behavior changed after the fork, are there still people commenting chasing votes, do you think the comment quality has improved or degraded?

For me, I think I receive less comments on average but they are higher quality on average. I have been going out of my way a little further to leave comments on the authors I enjoy and those I think add value when I can and, I have spent more time in areas I hadn't before and engaged with people I didn't even know existed.

For me at least, post-fork Steem comments have improved on average and there is more quality over qualtity. I think that my feed has also slowed a little and similarly, those that come through are of higher quality than they were. It is hard to know if this is Steemiversal though, as I do not see every post.

What are your thoughts on comments and quality and do you think the change has improved or degraded the conditions?

I thought comments would go down, but I still get a lot. I also thought I would have to stop voting on comments, but my top level posts are earning more now, so I find I can still keep voting on comments and sometimes the conversations that develop in the comment section are far more interesting than my post.

I am also trying to get back to commenting more on authors that are still building an audience.

I have been voting on comments on other people's blogs more than my own. I do core to bring some good discussions to the top though.

Commenting in general is such an important part of building an audience, including answering in a somewhat timely fashion. Follow up is a part of customer service.

In my opinion, being engaged means leaving comments. Spreading votes around is great, but impersonal. Leaving comments is how I make friends here. For me it's always been about the interaction.

I agree. Some post expecting their post to do all the work of building relationships. Doesn't really work for most.

I really haven’t noticed much difference in the comment section pre vs post HF but then again, I think my own actions, or lack thereof, has always been what effects the comment section the most. Overall it’s a bit slow in here so that of course effects the commenting too. But quality over quantity for life!

I think people are posting a bit less, especially the ones I have been following. I think this might be because they are earning more and don need to post as much or, they are earning more through curation and don't feel they have to post as often. Either way, I should follow more people.

Well my comment behaviour hasn't changed at all. At least not in my opinion.

But let's cut my answer in several pieces!

Regarding the upvoting of comments.

When I do was a small fish in the steem ocean, I did write a lot of comments. Not to score an upvote but to be honest I didn't mind to receive them either. It was more a way interacting with the author about an interesting post and also a way to promote myself (aka blog) to the author!
But those small upvotes on comments back then was my main steem income. My post earning were, euhmm let me get my calculator, non existing! So yes for a newcomer an upvoted comment can be worth gold!

Upvoting comments

Well I never have been in the situation that I was able to spread around lot's of upvote on the comments I did receive. I did try this but it just vaporized my VP to give away an upvote to a genuine comment.
But thanks to @toofasteddie I did learn a new way of rewarding genuine comments to my poorly written posts! I can give away some !BEER. This doesn't hurt my VP, but still I can thank the ones who were brave enough to read my complete post and did find it worth writing a comment!

Commenting on comments!

Just like you I do try to reply on all genuine comments! Why write a post if you are not engaged to engage with the ones who do want to engage with you! Probably I did miss some, but it would be a lot!

Mhh I did change my commenting behaviour

Well I was part of a community which did require to upvote and reply to at least 3 post of fellow community members per day! I did quit just after HF21, but the reason was because of the HF. It dawned to me that some comments I did write were not genuine and were just written because I had to follow the rules. Also lot's of the comments I did receive were not truly genuine. So I decided to pull the plug and did asked to remove me from the community and did leave there discord server. Which does feel like a relieve!

Commenting on post

I just wrote an article today about what I was looking for on the steem blockchain. And I did find the answer for myself. I will spare you to read my complete and utterly useless post and write it down here!
I am looking for opinions! An article with an opinion broadens my knowledge and interest. It gives the audience a platform to interact. They just have to grab the opportunity!
So I am trying to increase my engagement and read more posts and articles. Preferably the ones with an opinion. Because my main interest is sports and I will explain it with an example. My heart bleeds when I do see a post, which just sums up all the results of yesterday and gets rewarded with 15K sports or more. I am not interested in those post. I am interesed in a post why Man City for instance did fail to win for the first time, how it could be solved and stuff like that. (More examples in my post).
Post like this do have a better chance the get a good SEO, giving more exposure to the steem blockchain, which could result in some fresh blood!

Well the comment has been dull and long enough! Thanks for the guts to read it all :)
(Looks like I am in ranting mode!)

Cheers,
Peter

It was more a way interacting with the author about an interesting post and also a way to promote myself (aka blog) to the author!

THis is a good way and I know that for many it was also a source of income. I think the tribes are a good source now in this regard and hopefully, more niche for interest groups.

I did try this but it just vaporized my VP to give away an upvote to a genuine comment.

Mine too. As prices dropped I was using 5 or so full votes a day on comments.

Why write a post if you are not engaged to engage with the ones who do want to engage with you!

Why comment or vote on posts with people who don't engage? :D

It dawned to me that some comments I did write were not genuine and were just written because I had to follow the rules. Also lot's of the comments I did receive were not truly genuine.

Other than writing practice, these types of engagement rules quickly devolve into shallow and meaningless. I would prefer a thoughtful response every now and again then a stream of blah.

Ranting mode is acceptable :)

Well, when I made the post, it got over 180 comments. And people actually voted on some comments there. And besides that, I've gotten engagement from many new users I didn't see pre-HF, so I'm pretty happy with the engagement overall.

My behavior is still the same: if I have something to add, I comment, if not, I don't bother.

Yep, sometimes a decent post that gathers some attention will bring in more user eyes. Not always easy to get a post like that though :)

Uhm well, I think philosophy and HUMOR are my favorites. Although I find the later is harder to pinpoint than a fuckin needle in a haystack across the entire steem blockchain.

But yeah, it's prolly because usually I haven't taken yet my medicine. :p

why are the comment votes so necessary?
wouldn't commenting be part of the experience?

Yes, I sorta agree with you here. But never forget the 'Naked Truth'

What are your thoughts on comments and quality and do you think the change has improved or degraded the conditions?

Well, as for this specific subject, I guess I already spoke a week ago. In an extravagant 'dense' dissertation in which, by the way, I noticed the absence of your attention, engagement, feedback and 🔊 Kaching 🔊 appreciation. :p

Steemiversal; Stakematician. Coining new words every post. - Specsational.
Did you hear about the constipated mathematician?
He worked it out with a pencil.

Not so sure you want comments on your posts now, are you?

I usually only comment when I have something to add. Sometimes the author has done such a thorough job on the topic all I can really add is some smart arse gibberish.

It is a bit of an addiction and although they seem lonely and lacklustre now, I am not disheartened as once the masses champion these new-fangled words into common usage, I'll be walking with a swagger and others will look on in amazement.

Just a small selection of words Shakespeare made fashionable.

Smart arse is better than no arse, so I hear.

While my commenting has reduced it really hasn’t been because if the Hard Fork as it has been busy for me lately. In fact, I still think that engaging with authors is still the best way to get attention and build relationships. However, I am sure that most commenting pauses are now due to less upvotes on comments. However, I have seen improvements in quality as you mention as well so it could be a filtering effect.

so it could be a filtering effect.

I think so too and perhaps for the meantime it is a good thing so more focus can be spent on the comments that aren't doing it for a few cents. I do think however that when it comes to the tribes, there is a lot of people adding tribe tokens to comments and people who don't comment on Steem might be missing out in other ways.

My commenting behaviour hasn’t changed 😆

I’ve had at least one person apologise for their dust votes getting obliterated, I told them something along the lines of I’m going to comment regardless (unless they tell me to shut up/go away).

I pretty much stop commenting and sometimes upvoting altogether on people that never respond (occasional is fine as people are busy and a lot of my comments don’t necessarily warrant responses so I class “never respond” on the handful of times I’ve asked a question or for clarification on something in the post as I’m not good at otherwise initiating conversation 😅).

The comments I get are as good as they always are 🙃 (I don’t get many as with the stuff I mostly post there’s like 3 people on steem that has a clue what I’m blathering about 🤣)

What I think and try to remember to do is when I get good comments, go and see there content and add some value there instead of on the comment itself. Generally I would give above a dust vote for a comment but on a post, I would likely add more percentage anyway.

there’s like 3 people on steem that has a clue what I’m blathering about

nods.

I think I've noticed a marked difference generally speaking on my feed. I never really bothered looking at trending or new, preferring to find posts I wanted to read (and engage with) via the various community chat servers, where people drop links into promotion channels.

I also think I've noticed a difference with comments too. Have the rewards for comments been taken away? I thought that was part of the last HF, but you can still vote and receive rewards for them?

I dabbled a bit with steem-bounty, but honestly I found it didn't actually increase engagement... the quality comments were coming from those who were already reading and engaging on my posts, and the 'new' people didn't even follow me and left some kind of spammy comment. I don't know why they even bothered, as of course I never voted their comments, thus they never got any of the bounty. I like the idea of it though, being able to directly 'tip' those who comment and engage in a genuine, thoughtful manner.
