Steem is in trouble. Here's how to help.

avatar

A lot happened on/to Steem today. I personally was in the cinema/offline all day, and when I got back online, driving a tram towards my dinner, I saw some hints of confusing stuff happening.

Of course, for me it was at the end of the day, others woke up to this news. Or went to bed with it. Or are still waking up to it.

Anyway. I don't want to/can't provide you with a very well-written summary of all that happened.

The current witness list shows it best:

Screen Shot 20200303 at 00.06.43.png

Basically our chain got taken over in a hostile way, namely by having 20 'fresh' witnesses voted in to consensus positions thanks to Justin Sun convincing exchanges this was a needed/planned/usual Hard Fork.

The wording of the above sentence might not be 100% correct once we get all the information, but that's how it looks for now.

All the witnesses WE VOTED FOR OURSELVES even after the controversial Hardfork 22.2 have now become non-consensus witnesses, so spot 21 and later.

This means WE, the Steem Community, have lost the people we want to represent us, and we are now 'represented' by one single person/entity.

This is bad.

The best thing we can all do, for now, is forget who we like, dislike, voted for/against in the past, because in reality we have all have one single enemy now: the freshly voted in top 20 witnesses. One is even called 'nicetry001'. Talk about a big F*ck You from Justin Sun.

We want them out. We might not make it, but we have to try, as if we try there might be a crazy whale on our side adding that last boost to his stake and making it happen?

We'll really never know unless we try.

Therefore: vote for the first 30 witnesses after the above screenshotted 20. In other words: everyone who runs anything else than 22.5 should be voted IN.

I've heard in the 7 hour long (!) discussion that witness voting went waaaay up the last few hours so let's just keep on pushing.

How to vote?

Since nodes are offline and stuff is happening it wasn't easy to find a way to make witness voting work. What worked for me was:

  • Open the keychain extension in my browser.
  • Go to 'preferences' and chance RPC node to steemd.minnowsupportproject
  • Go to steempeak.com/me/witnesses and vote on those after the top 20. You can even unvote everyone who is lower than the top 50 so you can push even more of your SP towards people who might actually make it to top 20. (Of course when danger has been averted you can vote back in your favourite witnesses <3)

What else can you do?

I've personally tried to tweet a few things. Binance and Poloniex and Huobi have received funds after which they voted on the 'new' top 20 witnesses. Rumours are they used STEEM that was held on the exchanges to be powered UP so they could vote!

We can't confirm if this is true, yet, but IF it is true that's horrific and a huge shameful thing to do - pretty much hurting their reputation. People like Vitalik are joining in the discussion, and many crypto sites are already reporting on the 'hostile takeover by Justin Sun'. We should leverage the attention that is being given to us and make a lot of noice/ask a lot of questions to exchanges, especially questions about 'where did the STEEM I held on your exchange go to? Did you vote with my stake?'

Follow the #steem tag on twitter to learn a bit more. The discussions are flowing. For me this plus the 'vote your witnesses' was the Call-To-Action I wanted to share quickly before going to bed.

Tomorrow is a new day with new insights and new words to share with all of you. It's also a new day to fight for our right to decide on the fait of our own blockchain.

Let's not be quiet about this.

Cheers.

I really wish I could do/say more, but I'm dead tired. Just read @vandeberg resigned from Steemit, Inc., which is both commendable and very sad sad news for all of us. I hope we can somehow get #decentralized again, but we'll have to be quick and decisive in the next few days.

Thanks for stopping by :-)

I'm sure we can pull it off! Take a break, this has been quite exhausting and probably will continue like this for some time so we'll need lots of energy.

I see, was confused as to what the goal was as it wasn't really a personalized comment :-) But yes, there's a lot of reporting, and the hashtag #steem will take anyone reading this to even more relevant tweets and discussions. I think responding on some of them can be useful, especially pushing the exchanges on why they did what they did.

Thanks for understanding and my further apologies about not being personal. I generally am actually. I have been pushing on the exchanges along with everyone else for the majority of the day. :) Doing everything I can... like most of us are.

Currently a Hard Fork is being developed so hopefully they can roll it out soon.

Good call to action.
Voting for witnesses is something new users don't bother much to do and it may be an excuse to use it for the first time.
Witnesses are miners that mantain the blockchain running and also develop third party applications.
Every user as 30 votes to spend which delegate or support a certain voting power (not the regular one around here) on the "rules" of the blockchain, which are not suposed to be always changing but according to consensus and from time to time, with proper discussion before hand. Since there was no pre-warning about all this, the witnesses are supporting a different version of the blockchain which is what is already built, and with some temporary block (1/2 weeks?) i supose on the major voting accounts which should be clarified how they are suposed to function.
So hopefully this is a call to action to new members to use that feature of steemit, see the work done, and suport the witnesses that are already here.

Exactly - not many users do and sometimes it's because you don't know why/what to vote on, but for now it's very basic: focus all our votes on those with a small chance of ending up in the top 20 and we can maaaaaybe get somewhere. Thanks for helping inform others of this option we have :-)

Hey Rosa, I am about to write a similar call to action but I would like to include a trustworthy proxy for those who don´t want to vote manually. Is there any you would recommend? If so, could you share the link here please?

They can pick anyone who they think will do research on witness votes and not just vote friends or do vote-trading. I would therefore pick someone who isn't a witness themselves (as there might be witness politics involved in their vote behaviour) but who is active and informed. If they just want to proxy for the current situation they might as well pick you or me and undo the proxy voting once the chain is back in our hands. I for one will make sure my votes are given to the first 30 active witnesses who have their nodes online.

Yes, exactly my thoughts but I don´t know how to set myself as proxy. Would you mind setting yours and linking it here? Or just linking any other person´s who votes for full 30 witnesses picked from our old witnesses.

I don´t know how to set myself as proxy.

You don't have to. It's up to a Steemian to just vote on you and you are being proxied :D

Anyone can type any name in this field to proxy that person's witness votes:

Screen Shot 2020-03-03 at 14.08.07.png

Field can be found on this page: https://steemitwallet.com/~witnesses

You can also set your proxy on KeyChain:

Hope this helps :-)

We should be angry, but try to maintain the moral high ground. Justin has been disrespectful to the true witnesses by calling them malicious hackers. We should not sink to that level.

Things will be different going forward, but I hope we can retain some of what we have built up through years of effort.

Yes, I do hope we can maintain the moral high ground and stay respectful. We really have a HUGE opportunity to show the world we are serious, dedicated people who don't want to lose what we've built over the years. I can see a future where we take back our chain by forking it and simply all moving towards that new chain. I wish it were different though, but at this point trust has been broken so severely without having anything to fall back on (as we didn't have any prior relationship with Sun).

I think you missed the point where they tried fuking him over first.
Instead they ended up having to bend over themselves.
Also last night in the 'community' meeting they eluded to that fact many a time but then ignore it.
If you read through the chat it was not unanimous about what happened and future moves.
But as usual these 'witnesses' just want whats best for themselves.
So what have these top 20 witnesses done.
Take this 'head of communications' other than posted pics of his cat wtf does he communicate.
So Justin outsmarted these morons
Do you wanna be led by morons?
Or a guy that can out play em?
Probably morons so get yourself a shit side chain.
Etc? Bcash? Exactly.
Now to justin himself i could not give a fuk about him. But why not give the guy a chance?
If he was called james white from new york and did exactly the same moves would you all feel the same? Would you fuk
As for the 'community' why is everyone been asked to go to facebook and twitter to make a point?
Coz nobody read the shit on here.
Whos fault is that?
Your previous fab 20.
Sorry i have written a whole post in your comments but if i wrote a post i would not get a single comment unless i was sucking off the fab 20. Which is precisely my point about this platform.
Its made by the whale for the whales and everyone is so bought into it your blinded.
Furthermore none of these comments are directed at yourself just a general comment about the whole system.

Hey @steemitcuration, don't worry about 'writing a whole post', we are all worried and involved and it's good to get the opinions out.

I think you missed the point where they tried fuking him over first.

I understand what you mean, and if we only look at what happened 'on the chain' then it might look like 'the witnesses' were the first one to 'attack'. But as I wrote in another comment below my post:

There's a lot of evidence suggesting he was planning something 'hostile' all along. Amongst others: 1) screenshots with announcements that Steem would be made worthless by adding a Steem token on Tron and adding that one to the exchanges instead of our own $STEEM, all these announcements have been removed from the twitter and medium pages, but the screenshots still exist, 2) him ignoring the pressing questions that he said he would give 'the highest priority' during the AMA, these were questions that would have been able to reassure us, but he chose to purposely ignore them, 3) him ignoring many requests to talk to him in calls - witnesses did have ideas on how we could keep the status quo without doing a soft fork, but he chose to ignore these invitations, 4) his recent voting in of Tron Super Representatives, showing he is willing to use his money to get a blockchain to do what he wants, instead of trusting the consensus.

If we take actions 'off the chain' into account as well I'm not so sure if 'we'/the witnesses were the first ones to attack.

But this is certainly not a black&white issue, keep reading and informing yourself, a lot has happened, and there's no easy way to generate an extensive timeline about all of it and find an objective 'truth'.

Cheers.

@soyrosa
I am not disputing the fact he may not be trust worthy.
But it is still speculation.
On the other these have been here for years what have they done?
Everything has been in the interest of there own pockets.
I have no intention of going anywhere either way i have 3 accounts and have my own token and have invested at a much higher buyin than others.
But the whole thing was rigged for whales from the start.
There plan to seperate is poinless.
Which clone can you name that has worked none and thats what a new chain will be.
So why not work with the guy and build it as he has stated a few times.
If we dont wanna believe him fine but there is even less reason to believe the previuos ones

I think this is where we disagree which is okay :-)

No fork has ever been able to 'take with them' all the Steemians. I 100% believe Steem will be where the Steemians are. Sun doesn't understand this - if he did he would've been more interested in talking with us. If the Steemians move all he bought was a company (of which now 3 people who are essential already resigned!) and a piece of code that's open source anyway. He'll have nothing if we all leave to another fork of our chain.

So why not work with the guy and build it as he has stated a few times.

This is what we wanted but I think it's too late now. Trust is broken.

Actually Sun showed his hand by over riding TRON community voted witnesses using a ninja mine stake first. Our Steem witnesses had to take steps to preserve the status quo of the Steemit ninjamine stake not being used to vote.
I was a bit uncomfortable about it at first but it has flushed out Sun's authoritarian streak. He is the anti-Steem.

Have to agree mainly, even I fully support a lot of the previous Top 20 witness. The Soft Work was made by good intentions but not thought very well. The revenge was to be expected. A sad week - I hardly had time to follow all happenings but not good mood for me on that, still a bit hope that all will turn back into good

But if you call this "hostile takeover" by justinsun, what was HF22.2?
HF22.2 was against private property, both was crap decisions but the "witnesses" started that crap.

(Edited)

HF22.2 was controversial and I wrote posts about what I thought about it. There were two possible routes:

  • Justin Sun was planning to take-over Steem anyway and the witnesses therefore were right to temporarily (!) limit some of the actions he could take until we could talk to him. In that case current actions taken by him prove they were right and the measures should maybe even have been more decisive.
  • Justin Sun is innocent, was really planning to do 'everything good' we wanted, and never planned to take over Steem in order to grow 'his' Tron. In that case, the decision of the witnesses is the sole reason the current SF22.5 is happening as he felt he had to protect himself.

So, to answer your question:

But if you call this "hostile takeover" by justinsun, what was HF22.2?

HF22.2 was a protective, temporary (!) and reversible (!) action taken by democratically chosen (!) witnesses to keep the status quo on Steem and find out if Sun would use his stake as it was meant/promised in the past.

I hope I answered your question.

In that case current actions taken by him prove they were right and the measures should maybe even have been more decisive.

No they did not prove this, because its another context, you can not hit somebody and when he hit you back say that he hits back proves that he planned to hit me before i hit him so i would have better shoot him:D

Yeah your right, but basically he buy this stake, so in our dpos chain he could use his stake to vote and therefore generate this consensus.

In an dpos chain consensus is about buying stake, because the account with the highest stake has the highest influence.
This is something we have to accept and it perhaps is a weak spot, because having the biggest stake doesnt mean you are right.
But in steem consensus having the highest stake means you are right.

And i think he delted the twitter and medium announcements, because he changend his opinion on migrating to the tron blockchain.
The communication of him i read after that was like no we dont would like to tokenswap or bs like this.

hope you understand what i mean, english is not my mother language

That's one way of looking at it. Others see it differently.

I'm not saying I disagree with you - I see what you mean. I also see what others mean. It's a very tough discussion and we might never be able to find out everything that's been going on. We'll have some hard decisions to make nonetheless.
