PALnet Ushering In The Future Of Steem

avatar
(Edited)

If you haven't been living under a digital, block-shaped rock, you most likely have heard about the recent development and release of PALnet.io. Developed by and made for one of the largest communities on STEEM, Minnowsupport. This new, tokenized, interface of the Steem blockchain is bringing us one step closer to my grand vision of what this blockchain is going to become in the years to come.

Steem-based, tokenized interface, for every community you can possibly imagine.

For a while now, I had this idea boiling up in my mind and now we are seeing its first roots making headway for others to improve and build upon. What I envision is going to happen going forward into the future is that we are going to have a Steem interface for a every single community you can possibly imagine, all running on Steem and with their own Steem-based token that has a unique utility, tailored to the wants an needs of its respective community.

This is going to be huge because the implications of it are unquantifiable. They are quite literally limitless.

Just try to conceive the sheer number of different communities existing in the world. How many can you possibly think of, of the top of your head?

Probably quite a lot.

Now try to add to that, all of the communities that are explicitly hosted on our worlds parallel iteration -- the internet -- simultaneously running on a different frequency but at a much faster pace, and accompanied by an immeasurable increase in connectivity and a potential for garnering millions of people over a shared interest.

It's perplexing to even try to think about and certainly quite impossible to quantify the exact number of communities that exist in the world and its hard-fork.

This is where Steem comes in.

Soon, it's going to become home for thousands of communities.

Whether it's a community of cactus & succulent enthusiasts creating content about and trading their spiky, golden-ratio-infused friends or it's a bunch of StarWars fans making memes and cracking up cringy jokes or anything in-between, chances are that in the years to come there will probably be a Steem-based interface designed specifically for that purpose.

With the ability to create their own token and economy, the sky is the limit to the potential of this unique opportunity.

Utility and potential of running your own Steem interface accompanied by the relative ease of making it happen is undeniably enticing.

We've already seen a couple of these interfaces come to life recently, but sooner than later, we will see a heavy influx of new ones coming out. So many of them will go live in the years to come that it will be increasingly difficult to kep track of all of them. So much so that it will become nearly impossible to follow all of the developments.

Nevertheless, instead of earning just STEEM/SBD for our work, we will be earning a dozen different tokens for the same publication. Collectively, these tokens will probably be worth more than the amount of STEEM/SBD earned which brings me to the end-game of this grand vision which is that:

STEEM is going to become an underlying asset of this blockchain, used solely for RC's while most of our payouts will come from all of the different Community Tokens.

Dapps need tens of thousands of STEEM, powered up to be able to run their applications, while users need as much as they want to interact with the blockchain. Over time, this effect will compound greatly with all of the communities joining and launching their own Steem-based interfaces.

This will obviously significantly increase the price of STEEM.

It's surely an interesting time to be a Steemian and soon our job of keeping track of what's going on here will become much more difficult. While this might be a pain in the rear for some, let me encourage you by saying that staying informed at all times will pay fat dividends for those who will invest their time into research.

I for one will have a blast spending my days reading about all of the developments, somewhere deep in the rainforests of Thailand.

How about you?

Will you be able to keep up with the Steem spaceship?

I had the same vision a long ago but now I'm not sure if steem blockchain is capable of this heavy load not to even mention sign up process.

I got started on Steemit in the early days and never realized how difficult it is for new users to get started. I was really shocked when I discovered some of the issues.

Steem can handle quite a lot of traffic, that's for sure. On the other hand, sign-ups are going to be a major issue. I'm not sure how we are going to circumvent it without having to charge newcomers a couple of bucks per account.

“STEEM is going to become an underlying asset of this blockchain, used solely for RC's while most of our payouts will come from all of the different Community Tokens.”

I agree with this completely. It’s been clear to me that this is the direction that Steem is headed ever since HF20 when RCs were released. Palnet has arrived at the precise moment when a taste of the future was needed most.

Palnet is a perfect example of how Steem should work — you focus on earning PAL for your posts (or insert whatever community token you’d like) and then you earn a tiny amount of STEEM in the background. You don’t really care much about the STEEM though, as the value of the PAL you earn dwarfs that STEEM amount.

Individual users will not care much to power up STEEM.. except maybe the older users/big fish who have been in STEEM for a while and want to delegate it to projects.

Businesses, communities and projects will be the ones who care about STEEM. They’ll care for the RCs and potentially other use cases. STEEM will be the backbone currency for all these communities just as BTC is the backbone currency for all cryptocurrencies.

So true.

You know what I like about Palnet the most currently? The state of its trending page. It's a hundredfold (at least) increase in quality of content which is presented on there. Being as sick of Steemit's trending as I am by now, it's a breeze of fresh air reading through the trending articles on Palnet.

Businesses, communities and projects will be the ones who care about STEEM. They’ll care for the RCs and potentially other use cases. STEEM will be the backbone currency for all these communities just as BTC is the backbone currency for all cryptocurrencies.

You hit the nail on the head! I wholeheartedly agree with you on this and echo this statement into infinity. How long do you think it will take for this grand vision to play out? I'm thinking about 2-5 years but who knows. New developments come fast in crypto and it's as if time passes slower in the cryptosphere than in the real world, thus giving us more time to innovate :D

That certainly would be interesting. Right now PALcoins work through Steem Engine. If I'm understanding correctly, the Smart Media Tokens (SMT) that I've been hearing about lately are something different, a different system. If so, how will SMTs effect things like PALcoin and Steem Engine?

They are relatively the same but the main differentiation is that SMT's is going to be hardcoded into the blockchain while Steem Engine tokens are on a side-chain.

When the mythical SMT's finally arrive, it won't be doomsday for SE. It will still keep on keeping on, 3 seconds at a time just without some tokens which will choose to migrate while others will stick around. It all depends on the dev/team behind the token.
