"So how do I get Steem?"

Simple! There's 4 ways you can get Steem. Post content, curate content, buy Steem, and exchange for Steem.

Posting Content - Probably the easiest and freest way to get some Steem. Simply post good and interesting content and supporters will upvote you. After a 7 day period from the time the post is made, the rewards will be paid out. Though at this time, any upvotes after the 7 day period and payout will not generate any increase in the post's rewards for the author nor curator. (See Part 13 Bonus Stuff for my thoughts on this.) Don't expect to get rich overnight! But over time as you be consistent post more content, your following and upvotes will grow and who knows, you might get some "whale" upvotes. ;)

Curate Content - The next easiest and freest is upvoting posts you like and commenting and engaging with others. The former rewards you part of the post's 50% reward that goes to curators (50% Author/50% Curators). The latter rewards comes from if you make well engaged, supportive, solid critiquing comments, etc.. Others and even the author themselves might wound up upvoting you. Just like the posting rewards, the rewards will be paid out on the 7th day the comment which was upvoted was made.

Buy Steem - You can buy Steem through your Steem Wallet which will take you to Blocktrades or you can buy STEEM through another 3rd party marketplace.

Exchange for STEEM - If you have other cryptos like if you bought Bitcoin or Etheruem, you can exchange them for Steem on an exchange that has STEEM available.
