Ridiculous Curation, Underground Politics and some of the Shit that's making Steem so Lame

avatar

I was having a conversation with @brianphobos in his post about Steem being the side chick a few days ago and it was interesting to note that there are others who actually see the issues with Steem in pretty much the same way I do. His view, which is coincidentally mine was that most projects place emphasis on making Steem conducive for outsiders with "large following" but don't realise that the real value is within.

Circle Jerking is the order of the day

The perceived lack of engagement and brain drain that has taken place within the ecosystem is partly because of the drop in price and partly because people with the power are simply not doing enough by way of Curation. I certainly can't tell people what to do with their Steem or Steem power but at least I can spy on them and other than a few genuine content curators like @ocdb @oracle-d @threespeak , @curie and a few others, most other high sp holders upvote content in a manner that one can only classify as Political.

Fucking Ridiculous

Traditional Social Media is Still more Fun

As a result of all the circle jerking and political upvoting pattern that keeps the wealth between a selected few, the quality on offer has largely remained the same. I see content creators constantly dropping the same old shit day in day out for the nearly two years I've been here and make a lot of money off it. Yet there are people that make content that people in the general society can relate to not even getting a whiff of love.

The Brain Drain

This leads to the apparent brain drain and exodus that's been happening lately. I often count myself fortunate that I get the odd upvote every now and then from genuine accounts that give a shit and I also have no idea why there are a bunch of dust upvotes that hit my posts every time I post but I do know a fair bit of people who have left the platform because of a deeprooted feeling of disillusionment that transcended from lack of curation and attention.

Why Burn Steem When you Can Reward Content Creators with it?

This leads me to another point that I recently discussed with @whatsup. I don't understand the essence of burning Steem that could be used as an incentive for onboarding, as well as a reward for numerous unappreciated content creators out there. The idea of reducing inflation is noble but spreading the wealth around will also have a positive effect on the platform as a whole because it will motivate people to improve their content.

Onboarding and promoting Steem outside are very important for the community but how do you expect me to bring people to a platform that isn't giving me joy?

This is what people on the outside think of the platform by the way;

Whatsapp conversation with my cousin

This is just one of many people who visit steemit.com and see the trending page is loaded with nonrelatable information and just walk away. Some of my friends even assume I'm some tech wizard because I post on Steem

The community is somewhat detached from the general society and we're not doing enough to encourage steem based secular information. If one of the mantras of this platform is to reward, curate and promote "Quality" content, then we're truly failing at it. I'll probably get a real kick in the nuts for this but I feel like it must be said.

yeah you should and it is a great way to get new users signed up because while it is still more complicated than say, facebook or instagram, it is dramatically less complicated than the Steemit "portal."

yeah and a lot friendlier from what I see. People in the society(the people we're trying to attract) like seeing pretty pictures, locations and stuff like that.
I found that people would rather be appreciated than paid for their content. It is the weirdest thing ever but it is what it is. There's this other photo sharing interface that looks like Instagram called Appics. Seeing Steem through that lens is soooo much better,

I’m not sure Steemit.com is the place to point people. We have many other frontends that can be offered up depending on people’s interests. Steemit Inc want Steemit.com to be the homepage for people interested in crypto, and I think down the line Trending will be mostly crypto promoted content.

That's the issue. Steemit sounds like Steem, don't realise that steemit is just one dapp on the blockchain , go to Steemit firs,t get discouraged and think the whole place is filled with science nerds. Steemit Inc also needs to do more to promote normal relatable content.

We did lose quite a bit of variety. Im to blame as much as the next guy but it seems to me that as long as the market is in the terrible shape it is right now, we dont really take time to enjoy, art, music, poetry etc.
The price is on our minds more then anything, thus we discuss steem the most.

That's one way to look at it I guess.

Yep. I have had a few people come to check Steemit out and not even sign up because as soon as they looked at the trending page they thought that all there was on here was shit. Granted, this was when Jerry was going strong and all the flag war shit was happening. I haven't looked at trending in a year or so but that was the way it was then.

They would see a great article make $.50 and a piece of shit make $175. It got pretty discouraging for them right of the start.

(Edited)

The trending page looks a lot better now I must say. The changes made in the recent *Hard Fuck led to new behaviour on here. There's minimal bot use/abuse and those silly flag wars and content about nothing that make it to the trending page get flagged the shit out of.

Well, the beauty of a decentralised platform is that we can just decide to start our own thing and put it on the trending page. Until then, the trending page will be filled with fancy articles about nodes, J-son(I read Jason) and all that.
