Is Manchester United's Deadline Day Transfer Of Odion Ighalo A Panic Buy?

Odion Ighalo becomes the first Nigerian to play for Manchester United despite it being a loan deal that sees transfer from Chinese outfit Shanghai Shenhua, the former Watford man who was the highest goal scorer during the African cup of nations was made a priority target by Ole Gunner Solskjaer. A viral picture online has sufficed where Odion Ighalo was seen wearing a Manchester United jersey way back before he even became a professional footballer. The loan deal sees the Nigerian play till the end of the season, and be comes in to fill the void left by Marcus Rashford who is currently out with a long-term injury. However what has prompted this signing? Has there been a definite reason by signing Ighalo or is it that there's no quality available in the market? Or is it even a panic transfer on the deadline day?

So many Manchester United fans have expressed concern as to why Odion Ighalo is the striker Manchester United got on deadline day, seeing he's coming from the Chinese league where football is hardly so competitive, it's however good to note that the former Watford man was once a star alongside Troy Deeney and he was of course a potent goal scorer, things however went awry and the natural number nine didn't do well in a complete season, making Watford ship him out to Chinese giants Shanghai Shenhua, where of course he rediscovered his goal scoring form but is this a criteria that qualifies him to play for Manchester United? I would say absolutely not! First Odion Ighalo is not a technical player, he relies more on comfortability to score goals and he's often lost when playing against a compact defense that's well arranged and disciplined.

His last season at Watford proved this and while he scored many goals in the AFCON and the Chinese league, I think England wouldn't really suit him to do well. However I feel Manchester United is aware of this factor and If you'd look well, you'd see that his signing was mostly inspired by the fact that there wasn't many quality players around, and clubs hardly wants to release their players during the January transfer window, United was touted to sign Raul Jimenez of Wolves but I don't think Wolves will let him go, The red devils have however signed Bruno Fernandez and the logical thing to do would be to sign a forward who will actually score goals since 14-goal star man Marcus Rashford is out for a long time and players like Jesse Lingard and And Antony Martial haven't been able to comfortably score goals as United have fired blank in recent times.

So in my assessment, Odion Ighalo's signing wasn't a panic buy, it was a signing that came out of necessity to replace an injured star man. Another thing about this transfer is that it's a loan deal and if Ighalo turns out to do badly it means that United has lost nothing since he'll be returning to his parent club anyway. So he was available for almost nothing and United knows that it's a gamble loan deal and anything is possible. So I feel Manchester United knows exactly what they're doing, this is definitely a smart transfer, well thought out, analysed and unlocked. The fact that this deal is a loan deal shows that United are hoping Ighalo will replace the scoring streak of Marcus Rashford and if he eventually doesn't, when he leaves them they can start looking for another striker or by then Rashford will have returned from injury.
