The 32-year-old was a guaranteed starter under Maurizio Sarri last season, with the Italian preferring Luiz alongside Antonio Rudiger at the heart of defence.

An impressive campaign for the Brazilian saw him sign a new two-year contract back in May - with the Blues straying from their usual practice of only giving one-year extensions to players over the age of 30.

However, despite recently speaking in glowing terms about Lampard’s return to the club, Luiz is now desperate to push through a move to Arsenal , and a reunion with Unai Emery.

The Brazilian did not train with the Chelsea first-team at Cobham on Wednesday and is agitating to secure a move to The Emirates.

The Blues’ kick off their Premier League campaign against Manchester United on Sunday and in their final pre-season friendly last weekend, Luiz was an unused substitute.

Against Borussia Monchengladbach, Lampard started with Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma, who has returned to the club after a successful loan spel
