Splinterlands Challenge of the Week: Spineback Wolf

in #splinterlands3 months ago

This week's Splinterlands Challenge of the Week was to showcase the Spineback wolf from the Death splinter

This is one of those 'old forgotten beta cards that you really see in battle these days - he's fairly average for a 'reach' card - good speed, reasonable damage, and thorns, but they're not used typically with a second row monster.

And as a 'second tank' he's fairly useless thanks to the low shields and health.

Probably why I only have him levelled to 5 and rarely use him, but a challenge is a challenge and so I dragged him out of hibernation for this battle.

The battle below features a classic line up featuring the Elemental, in which I win against a higher powered deck.

The Rule Set and Line Up

  • Mana 17
  • No magic

Both of which kind of favour the wolf, at least he certainly isn't a fetter!

**Summoner - Contesa **

  1. Skeletal warrior - low mana, 2, and no magic, so his shield ability is worth it!
  2. The Wolf - the challenge card, OK mana for what he does.
  3. Shadowy Presence - low on mana, I usually play this, great against snipe!
  4. Soulstorm - just an awesome card, and my main damage card.
  5. The chicken - defence against sneak
  6. Cursed slimeball, more defence against sneak.

Did my strategy work?

Beautifully, to see it in action click here!

  • Round 1 - We exchange blows, The wolf does his bit against my opponent's tank, but no where near as much damage as SoulStorm - my opponent's sneak on the Slimeball take out both his 1 mana cards thanks to redemption, NICE!
  • Round 2 - The wolf's high speed means he takes out my enemy's tank, then allowing Soulstorm to dispatch his Eagle, NICE COMBO! He sneaks my Chicken, but that's why I put him there!
  • Round 3 - it's all over already: my team take out all his remaining cards!
  • Round

How important was the Spineback Wolf??

His fast speed came in handy, creating a nice order of dispatch in round two, and again in round 3, so all in all he did his bit.

But I think Soulstorm was the real start of the show, and also the Skeletal warrior with this shield for this ruleset proved excellent.

Final Thoughts: The Wolf - worth levelling up?

For me it's a no, sorry Wolfy.

There's too many other awesome cards in the Death Splinter to focus on levelling up - even if they are more expensive.

The obvious choice for a reach card is the Pegasus, with many more buffs, and for the mana cost, there's just so many hex cards with Death, with more useful buffs than the wolf I'd pass!

But he is kinda cute!

If you don't yet play Splinterlands, why not give it a go?
