Resulta impredecible adivinar qué fuerzas interiores se ponen en marcha para hacer de algo en apariencia tan simple como una canción, un mito universal que traspasa fronteras y echa raíces en el corazón humano.

Ocurrió durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, cuando un compositor alemán, Norbert Shultze, creó una canción, ‘Lilí Marleen’, que hablaba de una chica que esperaba bajo una farola enfrente de un cuartel y en poco tiempo se convirtió en el himno de batalla de los soldados de todos los ejércitos combatientes, haciéndoles soñar, en esos tiempos de muerte y desolación, con algo tan hermoso como el hogar.
[It happened during World War II, when a German composer, Norbert Shultze, created a song, 'Lilí Marleen', which told of a girl waiting under a lamppost in front of a barracks and in a short time it became the battle hymn of the soldiers of all the fighting armies, making them dream, in those times of death and desolation, of something as beautiful as home].

Suelo acordarme de esta anécdota, cada vez que paseo por la céntrica calle del Arenal y la veo acurrucada a las puertas de la emblemática iglesia de San Ginés, también bajo un farol, con su bata estrellada como la túnica del mago Merlín, luchando contra la vida y como los soldados que suspiraban en aquélla terrible guerra, quizás soñando ella también con superar la batalla de la vida y deseando tornar al hogar.
[I usually remember this anecdote, every time I walk down the central Arenal street and I see her huddled at the doors of the emblematic church of San Ginés, also under a lantern, with her starry robe like the robe of the magician Merlin, fighting against the life and like the soldiers who sighed in that terrible war, perhaps also dreaming of overcoming the battle of life and wanting to return home].
