Tons of Ski FOMO, but it is for the best

Today is a day where I had set a date with some friends to go skiing again. Due to multiple reasons we were kind of bound on not going that super far away, so Hoch Ybrig became the destination. The fact is, last week the weather hasn't been so friendly for the snow. A big ass fohn (strong winds up to 150 km/h and temperatures above 15 degrees Celsius on mountain level) was causing all of this trouble, but it has passed and snow is falling again.

But there are some things to consider. The rainfall of the last couple of days has caused the snow pack to severly shrink and make it more compact and firm. With the temperatures melting the top layer and freezing back in the night an icy top forms. With the snowfall from last nigth of about 10 centimeters, this is a recipe for sliding. Yes in avalanche sliding as well, but I mean more of me myself sliding on the ice. And that.....is a risk I am not willing to take this week.

My skis are standing there in the corner of the room screaming for some attention, but with my moving back to Holland next week, and starting a new job the week after...this is not the week to break some bones. Ofcourse you can always break something, also when the weather is fine (maybe the chance is even bigger then, because more people are outside), but what I see from the accidents that I see in the hospital, often the quality of snow also has a lot to do with it.

And when I see the images on these webcams, maybe it is for the better. Skiing in cloudy weather with active snow/rain fall is difficult because you don't have enough contrast with the snow itself. Not that is a good thing about the Hoch Ybrig region, because it not so high in altitude there are still alot of trees around. And trees are what give you the contrast in days like this.

This is what you see without contrast

So in the end...I think I made the right call, and I will just wait for better weather after Christmas to still hot some slopes before I move back to the flatlands. Outdoor sports don't always do what you want, and listening to what mother nature says is always the beste way to keep you safe.
