Tarantelle (from Contrastes) - Denis Bédard | Secrets of Organ Playing Contest Week 42

(Edited)

This is my entry for the Secrets of Organ Playing Contest Week 42.

I'm playing the final movement of Denis Bédard's Contrastes, 'Tarantelle', which was commissioned by Carson Cooman. My last two contest entries have included the earlier five movements. It's a great feeling to have it now recorded in full!

What is a Tarantelle?

A Tarantelle (or Tarantella) is a fast piece, usually in 6/8 time. It's also known to be in 12/8 or 4/4 time. In Bédard's case, this Tarantelle is in 12/8. Having it in compound time gives the piece a much more upbeat feel—which is what you will hear in Bédard's work.

There's a popular belief that a Tarantelle kind of comes from the word Tarantula which kind of relates to Tarantism. Where 'Tarantism' is a form of hysteric behaviour from a Tarantula bite. So I guess when you're listening to this piece, think of yourself getting bitten by a Tarantula and dancing away in pain :)

Here's the links to the earlier movements if you're interested:

A good, energetic piece. You might record all five movements one day on your next CD. You should send the link to Denis Bédard. He will be very interested to see you playing his music.

Thanks. I really had fun playing this one. I stitched all the movements together and will post the complete suite one day.
