Secret soft fork to mitigate potential risk?! More like firing the first shot!

I don't like Justin Sun as a person, never did and probably never will.

Tron's initial announcement and the following tweets regarding the acquisition of Steemit, Inc. were a complete mess and could be interpreted as an intention to fully move Steem (not Steemit, Inc. or steemit.com) into Tron. And that was and is not acceptable!

In the meantime Sun seems to be more careful in his tweets about Steem, not to cause more animosity.

So I guess it was the other side's time, right? It became kind of quiet.

Our top witnesses have been on a highly belligerent stance ever since the initial announcement.

That culminated last night (my time), with a secret soft fork to nullify many relevant attributes of Justin Sun's stake.

Thank God at least they kept some rational thinking and didn't hark fork this, so it can be reversed easily.

Let's have some facts:

  • while Steemit, Inc. stake was ninja mined, Justin Sun PURCHASED it (along with Steemit, Inc.). If you wanted something done with the ninja mined STEEM, you should have done it before someone purchased it!
  • what the super-majority of top witnesses bravely considers a protective / defensive move (for their asses or for Steem?), I consider as a the first act of aggression (and potentially a pretext if Tron wants to swallow Steem)
  • Sun still reacted positively initially, but maybe you awoke in him an interest he didn't have
  • now we don't have to worry only about Justin Sun, we do have to question the actions and methods of our top witnesses as well

Well done, what can I say! Talking is overrated, right? Or talk is cheap, unless is forced upon you?

That's it, because I don't enjoy ranting.

fully agree, this sets dangerous precedents. Only a matter of time until there is a culture of banning and blocking random accounts. There is a fine line you should never cross IMO

I can't believe how proud people feel about what they did or what others did in the last 24 hours...

we can only amend our witness votes for now...

We can't really make an impact as all of the top 20+ witnesses have this soft fork running, except two.

well, then I'll vote for 30 that do not run it... :D

I don't vote as a rule for Top 20 witnesses, except a few (two of them run the old unforked version of Steem), unless necessary.

Otherwise I prefer to distribute my vote to backup witnesses, usually in top 50.

It is ridicilous how top witnesses knowing all this time about the ninja mine only react now. I think this fork was necessary now, but things should have been handeld long ago.

They had an understanding with Ned. They want to FORCE an understanding with Sun. The difference is, Ned (i.e. Steemit) mined the stake, while Sun PURCHASED it.

I think Sun has every intention of killing Steem as we know it. His past, and more recent actions with Tron, it's employees and community says it all.

That's a possibility. In this case, do you think we should have offered him the perfect pretext for pursuing this course of actions (as opposed to tweets)?

I strongly hope the bad blood can be ignored, but I have my doubts, especially after this cowboy stunt of the top witnesses. A war will most likely make steem irrelevant, but maybe that's what some want.

this cowboy stunt of the top witnesses.

Based on everything I have absorbed thus far, I think they were acting in the best interest of Steem. Not sure if it was the right action yet, but I do have concerns about the precedent it sets.

In the end, nothing is decentralized. That is a false bullet point. Those with all the Steem do what they want in the end. No different with any other item of value..cash, gold, or digital currency. It's all a game manipulated by those with the most to play with.

In the end, nothing is decentralized.

Probably true. I am not even revolted about that anymore. I just consider their solution to the problem the worse.

But true, coercive actions are easier to implement. One of the black moments in the history of Steem, in my opinion.

Not sure it is the worst, but I may b missing something. I think the witnesses took action they thought was appropriate for the community. We do vote for them, so I am going to trust they will make the right decisions.

Like you, I hope this doesn't instigate something that wasn't there to begin with. Seems like Sun is taking it in stride in public, but based on what I have read, he is more than likely seething.

Yes, I also believe the witnesses did what they thought was the best. But their best is not good enough. And that's why we have debates on Steem. I understand in their plan, they couldn't make this public worrying Sun will get wind of it. Perhaps they should have listened more to those opposing, even if they were very few, and not be so euphoric over an idea messing with people's property... temporarily.

Seems like Sun is taking it in stride in public, but based on what I have read, he is more than likely seething.

I don't know the man. We will see what the witnesses actually unleashed.

The announcement post didn't set the context explicitly, assuming the audience would have a good idea. I wrote a post to fill in those blanks. I'm interested to know if it changes your opinion at all. Even if it doesn't I would still like the feedback. Thanks!
