Blood of Innocents (Sorcery Ascendant Sequence #2) by Mitchell Hogan - Book REVIEW

Today we return to the small section of my review of the books. We continue with the Sorcery Ascendant Sequence series by Mitchell Hogan and the second part of the series - Blood of Innocents.

The first thing I would say now is that my attachment to this series has become even stronger and bigger after reading this sequel. It seems to me that the main impression after this part of the series is - evolution. In every way. You can clearly see how the writer, through his ideas, which he implemented in the first part of the series, rises to a high, really serious level. This great level, both of the writing skills and of the work itself, is immediately apparent after the first pages of the book.

The first impression is that the pace of the storytelling itself is much more directional. It gets a lot on pace, for a lot of reasons. The first and most important of these is that the events themselves take place at a high rate of speed, and all events pre-set must be reconciled. In this part of his work, the writer demonstrates an excellent ability to lead the story meaningfully and purposefully to a great culmination. Our protagonist, drawn from a humorous and relatively constant environment, seeking the truth, is drawn into a world of intrigue, secrets and hiding. Each and every new situation contributes to the new development of him as a character and his abilities. He matures from an innocent and naive guy, to someone capable and dangerous. But though surrounded by the harsh world around him, and his happenings, his moral compass keeps him on track. The writer vividly presents us with every thought and dilemma that leads him to the great growth and development of his character.

Many aspects of the story, skillfully guided by this writer’s pen, add a new charm to the world he has built. It allows you to see the whole idea from multiple angles, and you get a complete impression of the size and complexity of the Hogans idea.

The potential of the magic system was clear from the first book, but it was never fully developed, until now. The magic system, although in some segments it bears similarities to some of the systems I have read before, is in its essence truly original. In this part of the series, too, he gets full coverage. Through the character of the protagonist, Caldan, you will see that beneath one layer of magic, there is another, and after that another, and so on forever. The emperor hides knowledge from his subjects by hiding power for only one small select circle of people. And wherever there is great power, there is great turmoil, and vanity. The thing that I liked most about it was that it takes a grimdark view of good and evil without being a grimdark . With the exception of the main character Caldan, the reader never knows who is good and who is not or if anyone of the characters.

The story is exciting, well-written, intriguing and character driven. The actions they take spur on what will happen next. So many questions arise as the book becomes more dangerous in what is going on and complex in its workings about why and what each character is and is about.

I must note, though I could not cite a specific reason, that the dialogues are significantly better written. They are more intelligent and show a lot of things, but they also leave you wondering about a lot.

If you haven't already, give this author a chance, it won't disappoint you.

See you soon.
