Random childhood memories

avatar

Last night as I was attempting to fall asleep I suddenly got a couple random images in my head from an anime show I used to watch, at least I thought I had. Attempting to remember more from it didn't bring me any new information and I started obsessing more and more about what this Anime could be, if I really had watched it as a kid or if I had just dreamt it during my experimental lucid dreaming phase. It felt real but at the same time it was weird that I only had so few memories of it, I kept wondering why that was so.

So I decided to start googling, all I could remember what that the main character was a kid who got summoned into another world where monsters existed. I couldn't remember any of the monsters or other characters in the TV Show, all I could remember was that they were a group of people/monsters attempting to go somewhere to stop something from happening, and that something was locked inside of a mountain and was about to be set free unless they did something about it.

With not a lot of info to go with other than that I attempted searching for things like "anime dragons locked inside a mountain", "anime monsters locked/frozen inside a mountain". Nope nothing, I got spammed with articles such as "top 10 dragons in anime", "top 10 monsters in anime by power", etc. Browsing through all just to get a glimpse of something I could remember but it was futile.

After about an hour I started searching for "anime main character changes worlds" and there too I got handed "top anime where main character is summoned into another world". Browsing through some of those for another 10 minutes or so I was about to give up until I continued scrolling on this top 10 list and after #1 there was a "bonus mention" and holy fucking shit there it was. I was not making this anime up, not going crazy just yet, it really existed.

As I was looking at the monsters all memories started coming back to me, the cute penguin type that looked like it had a tire on its back. The big wolf with its cool colors and shine in the hair, the big eye that hopped on one leg and the bunny/kangaroo that used to punch a lot. The big golem I had no memory of so that was odd but I also remembered the main character really well again although I couldn't remember his name, surprisingly I could remember the girl character Holly.

I started thinking why this was, why just a few minutes before I stumbled upon it I had so few memories left of it, how come they decided to get triggered just now randomly, what was it all about. I came to the conclusion that this must've aired around the same time as Pokémon and according to wikipedia this aired 2 years after Pokémon but it could still be that I watched this before it thus Pokémon kinda overshadowed my memories of this as it became much bigger and popular not just as the anime but in many other forms.

I still have no idea how I started thinking about this or why, but I'm glad I did. I watched the first episode today and so many memories came back to me, what a nostalgia trip. I must've watched this in early 2000 so at least 16-18 years ago and with it came a lot of memories of that time as well. What I was doing, where I was living and what my interests were at the time (such as drawing and playing on the gameboy).

Anyway just felt like sharing this random story.

You guys ever get really old memories popping up in your head? Felt like this one was just about to be gone forever until it decided to make a late comeback.

Anyone else that watched this as a kid? :)

Monster Rancher, a super classic anime and quite forgotten, I liked it a lot when I was little, I even wanted to see it again, because I think I don't remember ending it, I saw it in Fox Kids.

Hi acidyo, this write-up was particularly meaty, fulfilling, wholesome, beefy and deserving of a CHOPS token. Don't Chomp on it all at once!

Did not see that BUT- that kid and the animals looks like an early Pokemon. Like Pokemon in 2000 when it still was easy collectingcards and no pokemongo

Omg, yes this is the series I was looking for when I did a character design some weeks ago. I watched it a few times in my childhood but forgotten about it.

Awesome!

Holy shit Monster Rancher, this was a pretty good show, it was really fun and besides it was kind of a pokemon clone it had a really fresh idea on the Isekai genre (main character transported to a fantasy world), which takes me to my other point. You were so lucky finding this anime the way you did, googling "teleported to another world" is a sure way to get lost in an ocean of uninteresting isekai releases, each season there are like 5 new shows like that ( is an epidemic I tell you), thank Pikachu you didn't get lost lol, I will always remember this show as my favorite monster-in-a-disc-pokemon-clone lol the humor is really cool

Haha yeh I couldn't remember some easier things to set it apart for Google at all so got pretty lucky. Yeah noticed they were mentioning a ton of anime like thy and most were from the last 2-3 years, there was even one like "transported into another world with a smartphone" like lol how far are they taking this. :D

Was pretty nostalgic but at the same time a bit cringe haha, not sure if I wrote it above but the reason I remembered so little is cause I happened to watch this before Pokémon so it overshadowed the memories.

Oh you have no idea, some of them are not bad at all but the majority are really "meh", and some of them are bad as fuck, you know an anime is bad when its name is "Conception" and it's about getting girls pregnant.... that's a real thing

Haha Very interesting! I never got into Anime, but about once a year I get the theme song and opening scene to Fraggle Rock from the 80s. I was about 4 years old in 1987. As a little kid I was always so amazed about how a civilization of creatures (puppets) lived underground.

Have you ever heard of this one?

What about Alf, Married with Children, and Pinwheel!

Cool Post!

By the way I'm from the USA. So this was what I was exposed to. I'd be surprised if they were airing any of these shows in Finland back in the day.
