Over Communicating

I was working with a new client recently to help her develop an online presence.

She used to be a former radio host, so thought it would be great to help her get started with a podcast.

We can work on the messaging, storytelling & value providing.

This was going to be great!

1 hour talking & you can tell she was getting hyped.

But certain eye movements also told a different story.

Something didn't seem right.

After a few, I asked her if everything was okay.

She hesitated for a second. Then responded with:

'You mind if I ask you a stupid question?'

Go on, I said.

'What is a podcast?'

We both had a good laugh once I heard the question.

Not because it was a bad question. But because we both had 2 different lens on.

I explained what a podcast was.

Once she realized it was pretty much a personal radio show, that's when she got really hyped!

I asked her if I could bring up this funny confusion in my email today to share a lesson.

She agreed.

So what was the lesson?

The lesson is, sometimes, you have to over communicate.

In my world, a 'podcast' is a regular terminology.

But in her world, 'radio' is a regular terminology.

Therefore, it was not right of me to assume she knew what it was.

The tricky thing about over communicating is that you need to know WHEN to do it.

If you over communicate every little sentence, then you'll bore the fuck out of people.

You'll come off as a rambler.

'So how do I know WHEN to over communicate?'

You need to analyze the body language.

A lot of people do not want to directly say something in fear that it may come off as rude or a silly question.

So you need to look for sudden shifts in the body which seem out of the ordinary.

In my case, she kept looking to the side, touching her neck & seemed like she wanted to ask me a question.

That told me that something was up.

A lot of times, you'll feel it in your body when the vibe is not congruent.

Learn to analyze your body when YOU are uncomfortable so its easier to spot when others are uncomfortable.

The communication world comes with a lot of nuances like this.

But the ultimate takeaway is: when you see out of character body movements, start asking questions & over communicating.

And if you are someone who doesn't understand a certain concept, then stop the other person and ask them to explain.

Don't assume they can tell something is wrong.

Most people don't know how to read bodies. Only a few people do.

If they are a stand up person, then they will clarify without hesitation.

If they make a fuss out of an innocent question, then that's a character flaw.

You should think twice before working with someone like that.

It's little stuff like this which separate the good communicators from the great ones.

So make sure you don't forget the details when you are in the real world.

Working with humans is very different than the classroom.

Stay alert homie.
