LIFESTYLES & STEEM - Small Contributions + Large numbers = BIG CHANGE!

I have spent much time at my dads place reflecting on his financial success and the sacrifices it required along the way in order for him to get there. In fact, as a family - we have often laughed at his statements regarding crypto and the fact that he had set himself into a better financial situation with crypto in five years than he did in a lifetime of building a property portfolio... makes you really think about the "roads to freedom" doesn't it...

There was a post I wrote shortly after joining Steem called Calculators to Crypto which holds a special story regarding the above (as well as special significance to me because it was one of my only ever MASSIVELY Curied posts haha) feel free to read the post itself - but there is a specific excerpt I would like to take from it, which was a "story" from my dad - so I am going to copy it verbatim.

During our evening last night, my dad made mention of how so many of us “youngsters” simply lack perspective. We See things as they are and that is all we see – because that is all we know. This turned into a very interesting story as he began to describe just what he meant by “perspective”. Before getting into the crunch of the story, he reminded us that when he was at school there weren’t even calculators. That statement alone makes a person think!

image.png

(Yip, that little boy is my dad...) - My dad has been self-employed since as far back as I can remember and he has accomplished much with his life. He started his story about how running a business back then, consumed literally all of your time because if you were not present, the cogs stopped turning. Apart from the fact that at that time there were no cell phones, there were no fax machines – there was nothing but a telephone. When you did your banking - you wrote a million cheques and then you got into your car and you drove to the bank and stood in queues. If you needed to speak to a supplier whilst on the road you would have to find a pay phone to call them...

image.png

(Us back in the day, and yes, that little pork chop is me. hehe) How very different things were! He went on to tell us about when car phones (I think they were called car phones) came out and how he was one of the first to get one locally. He explained how utterly liberating that was because he could now be away from the office whilst still being able to communicate with them. He joked about how he would have to drive up to the top of the hill where our holiday house was situated, so that he could get signal to make calls, haha! Time went on, as time does and then came cell phones, internet and the whole bang shoot!

He was illustrating the point that through his life’s journey he has seen so many phases of change and his world has literally done a 180. We don’t have that same level of perspective, because we were born into this age. We continued to discuss how a few years ago, things like Steemit (as it was JUST Steemit at the time) did not exist. Things like crypto currency did not exist – and their now existence is changing the face of the world. - “We literally have the world at our fingertips” he said.

Everything he said was absolutely spot on! If we are smart enough to educate ourselves in the right spheres, we no longer have to answer to anyone or sit through a 9 to 5 job in order to support ourselves and our families. This is SO very true! We have a world of possibility at our disposal… we just need to see it. As with most things my dad talks about, he was very passionate in this conversation. I think largely because this “virtual world” has opened his eyes greatly to the limitless possibilities.

“I don't want to live in the kind of world where we don't look out for each other. Not just the people that are close to us, but anybody who needs a helping hand. I cant change the way anybody else thinks, or what they choose to do, but I can do my bit.”
― charles de lint

And this brings me back to the point of this post...

Whilst driving Jude to school this morning, I began looking around me at all the human traffic… People in their cars on their way to work, people jumping into taxis, people walking their kids to school or walking themselves to work – everyone was so RUSHED! There was one mother and daughter… the daughter looked like she had literally been dragged out of bed and thrown into her school uniform. Her hair looked like a birds nest and the mom was practically dragging her down the road.

Wednesday is a particularly early start for Jude at school because he does has vocal ensemble – and getting him up so much earlier on these days is a real challenge. He is always that much moodier and more tired… and we only have to do that once a week. Yes, the other mornings are early too, but not as early as a Wednesday.

What struck me though, was that this is everybody’s NORM - this is the hamster wheel that we all jump onto every day (in varying degrees). Watching all of this transpire around me, I could not help but wonder to myself how different the scene around me would look if people were not forced into existing just to make ends meat.

There would be no pressure – no ”go go go”, no obligation to make earnings so the day that lay ahead of all of us would be filled with so much freedom and potential and no doubt a lot more passion and enthusiasm. We could go out and have fun with our kids, spend quality time with them – getting to really know the little people that they are. We could become creative in our own rights as to how and where we would spend our hours. People would be happier, less stressed - the list goes on.

I always had quite a lot of time flexibility, having been a business owner, and now blogging full time and engaging with all of you lovely folk hehe, I have even more of that - yet even with that amount at my disposal, I still struggle to fit in everything I need to into a 24 hour period, while still attempting to find quality time for my family and for myself. And on this basis, I have often looked at the men and women who work in the local supermarkets. They only finish work at 6.30pm (or later) and then most of them still have to take public transport to get home… so they probably arrive home at about 7.45pm…. Jude is normally getting ready for bed at that time, or we are chilling on the couch together. Homework has long since been completed, supper eaten and that is our little bit of quality time. But those men and women haven’t even started cooking dinner yet… and what of the child’s homework – and even more so, what about quality time together as a family...to just BE!

So the child gets to bed late, so does the parent – they both wake up exhausted and then jump back on the wheel again! How utterly sad that this is what our existence has been diminished to – all because we are slaves to money!

Steem is an avenue that can change that for people. It has for me - no it does not cover all of my expenses but it covers some of them. since making the decision to walk away from my business my life as well as my financial obligations are a LOT less complicated, so really speaking... I don't need much to cover my bases and I would not change it for the world! This could be the case for everyone involved in Steem. The reason I am bringing this up is to highlight the importance of EVERYONE on this platform in helping one another. We are all one team in this world… we are all the slaves and if we work together, we can change that for ALL of us! - which to my mind, has always been the driving force behind the development of this "space".

So, no matter where you are on the food chain here - let’s start making a bigger effort to help one another! The quality and course of all our "lifestyles" can be greatly improved if we behave like a team and look out for one another rather than backbiting and engaging in other destructive behaviours... our energies would be better placed toward more positive things.

I think people (in general) underestimate the enormous power of a united collective. Most walk around (here and in the 3D world) assuming that their voice and action alone will have absolutely no impact but what they fail to consider is just how MANY people are walking around thinking exactly that! Put all those people together and believe me, you would be witness to the most mind blowing Mexican wave you have ever seen!

We ALL know where to start around here - and not unlike a beach clean up it starts with picking up the first piece of trash and denoting effort to preserving the beauty of the surrounding nature. So let's make an effort to do that - TOGETHER!

There are SO many of us (including myself) that make concerted efforts to uplift the genuine content efforts around here - what are you doing to add to that? (And no, I am not referring simply to resteems) - I think we should all make more of an effort to post highlights for the great things we have read and on the same hand the abusers of the system could also be brought into the limelight in a similar manner because most of us have become so nauseated by the trending page that we don't even visit it anymore and often miss the posts which are unjustly sitting at the top of that feed.

If you adopt a slightly creative approach, there really are countless ways in which we could tidy up and improve thing around here so that the people deserving of it - start seeing the light of the day and the time wasters get shoved to the bottom of the pile - but the fact remains... this can only happen if we all work together and in turn, this will only happen if everyone focuses on the bigger picture - that being - creating a better life and lifestyle for all!

Well, that is my opinion anyway... :)

There is no power in the world that can stop the forward march of free men and women when they are joined in the solidarity of human brotherhood.- Walter Reuther

I love that perspective talk. But this week I'm a hamster. What can I do, post a hamster report?

"I edited 160 photos today, 161 as I write this comment. About 89 more to go until I reach yesterday's count. And I haven't even done 5k steps yet and won't until the day is over...Oh, wait, the day is over, I am late into the night and still 88 edits to go..."

Cheers to the times when we're off the wheel!

Yes, cheers indeed! And you know what... it is artists like yourself that are GREATLY underrated around here. People grossly underestimate the time and effort that goes into what you do - they just see the end result and yes, they may go "wow" - but that is where it starts and ends. I empathise greatly with this having been in the design field for so many years... creative fields are often very thankless... so I would love to see more appreciation for that sort of thing around here - more so than all the monotonous crypto conversations which is essentially nothing more than peoples personal opinions and predictions.

True talents should also be acknowledged.

What if you like the hamster wheel though? Some people need to have that feeling of purpose to make them feel motivated.

For example... me :)

Yes I went travelling for 3 months and I really enjoyed it. It was a whirlwind adventure and if there was a way to earn more from posts to help supplement travels in the future from steem then I'd love it. But right now, that's not a reality.

Before I went travelling, I was temping at a company and doing a job that actually gave me some purpose and the managers respected me, great team and got on well with everyone. Now I'm back doing a slightly more advanced role and I'm enjoying it for a few reasons.

1 - better pay
2 - better perks (I was working via an agency that pays for time worked, no sick pay, no benefits, nada)
3 - financial/job security takes the pressure off

When I went travelling, I was updating my spreadsheet EVERY time I bought something and it was getting a little bit nervy towards the end as I was watching the amount get close to 0. My mission when I got back was to get a job because otherwise, I'd be categorically fucked!

Now I have that stream coming in, it can help fund other activities I want to do that steem otherwise couldn't and it takes the pressure off, a lot.

Everyone is different of course and has their own story but for someone like me, the employee mindset, having the job I'm in now is ideal.

Oh I hear you loud and clear and each to his own respectfully - but the thing is, you do not need to be in a 9 to 5 to live a life filled with passion, purpose and drive - essentially what I am saying is that you would have the freedom to create your own wheel haha - and maybe it turns even faster, but where you are the one that predominantly benefits from it... not your employer :) - You know what I mean :P

Just cried my eyeballs out over this quote “I don't want to live in the kind of world where we don't look out for each other. Not just the people that are close to us, but anybody who needs a helping hand. I cant change the way anybody else thinks, or what they choose to do, but I can do my bit.” my father in law could have said that exactly

Solidarity and unity will be bad for the stupidly rich who will incessantly campaign to keep us divided and polarized.

I love steem for the ability to directly help anyone I choose and help more with the power of my well earned stake. I love phc for our unity and combined positive power.

If it is to be, it is up to me(us!)

Great post!

I agree with you but we’ve been sold on so many things that I call “it’s always been this way” and the amount of dogma is hard to break out of especially with the crab bucket mentality people have

I’m personally quite the outcast and seen as a loon when I start talking about these things but I feel this rat race isn’t life and since then I’ve lived life my way

Most people don’t get it but I’m doing things that make me happy and conforming isn’t what I enjoy

I think it starts with the strength of one and the others will gravitate to you so I always encourage people to follow their dreams regardless of what others think or what is deemed acceptable

We only have one life, why copy what everyone element is doing

One person at a time :) That is all we can do and if everyone is doing that then a shift would be undeniable.

Could not agree more!!!! :)

Wow, I love when I am on the same wavelength as my friends! I was just thinking about this earlier this morning. When I started here on the blockchain, I had a thought about introducing new accounts. It turned into @heyhaveyamet, then @steemterminal, and now @steem-aide, but this is what I do with my dear friends @brittandjosie, @thekittygirl, @jamerussell, and @wesphilbin. What do I do as an individual to make a difference? I think I need to, once again, step out of that comfort zone and do something else for others.

@jaynie, thank you for confirming for me that it is time to do a tad bit more for others.

Sweetie, much like myself (at the risk of sounding like I am blowing my own horn) - you do a LOT around here for others but like you say, that comes from a community driven space. My thinking is this: People follow our personal blogs on a more one to one basis and that was one of the reasons I have decided to add post curation into some of my posts again, like I did in my "weekly round up" last Friday and will continue today.

I know not everyone does, but I do make use of other social media to promote both my own content as well as others and there is no question that it makes a difference in drawing in readers. If we all adopted the same mindset we could indeed make great change.

You had me with your talk of school. Ugh. That has been me this past week and a half.

We - as a group, a society, a family, or however you want to define "we" - can do this, but only if everyone is willing to. I tell my boys (you got me thinking of them with your talk of school - ugh) that we can strive for something greater than mediocrity if we are willing to make positive changes. Sometimes shit happens and the only change to make is a diaper (figuratively speaking) and that's okay as long as we don't wallow in it (because that's gross) or dwell on it. Positive changes. Sometimes sacrifice (you mean eating that heaping bowl of sugar-cereal gave you a bellyache? Well don't do it again. I know it's tasty. Don't do it. It hurts you. (and yes, I've had to have that discussion)) <-- (parentheses madness)

A group effort requires a willing group. And I'm so flustered with having to fight with my boys this week over school that I forgot my original point! Hah!

I think an unfortunate truth is that everyone is looking out for themselves (as a general rule, in society) and not other people. We've become accustomed to it, and it stretches into our online persona's as well. As an example, am I the only one who has chosen not to reply to someone for concern of how it will make them look, or fear of rejection? (I kinda hope so, but I also kinda hope not) (I'm also a member of an Introverts channel on Slack - it's amazing we can converse at all).

And now I'm rambling (Steem & beer = not good combination). In short, it can be difficult to look out for the group because it is time consuming, there's a fear of rejection, and we're all so busy just trying to get the kids to school. Agreed, however, positive and creative changes can make a positive impact for us all. It's up to us to do it.

hahaha!! Brilliantly apt!

A group effort requires a willing group.

BINGO!

And that was why I built the PHC server and is the reason I kept it closed. We have grown ever so slowly, but oh so solidly... and so it shall continue!

Yes, perspective is so important! I love my job but it definitely takes most of what I've got, and then I still need to find enough left over to distribute between eating, sleeping, blogging, writing fiction, being with family, having fun and getting exercise. I would like to place my order for a four-hour work day, please! Then maybe I could do it all.

I agree that we all should do more to help and support one another. That is one of the things I love about Power House Creatives. It encourages that, and has really helped to give me a focus on the Steem blockchain. I have so little time. But having daily things I do to help the community is a perfect. Then on weekends when I have more time I try to do more.

Yes! And it is in the doing of that... that we will be able to change this:

Exactly my sentiment and one of the reasons I am tightening those reins of support now because if you aren't all in - then rather leave. We have ALWAYS had the strength and impact that we do because we TRULY stick together and WORK TOGETHER for ONE ANOTHER! - That is the CORE DETAIL that sets us apart from absolutely EVERY other community on this blockchain. We may be small in numbers, but the difference is, we are all heading in the same direction - at the same time!

I agree! And I think it’s great that there is an expectation of complete commitment. Those requirements mean no one (at least theoretically) is pulling others’ weight.

Oh how I wish I can retire in a few years and live off steemit but I will die of hunger hahahaha I wish that people would start caring and looking out for one another more and I keep on hoping that the next generation will do it better . I cannot see my life without looking out and caring for others. Now imagine if our government starts doing that - such a beautiful country with more than enough for all , if not only a few is reaping the fruit.

I was lamenting on someone's post a couple days ago about how people we're so busy in life they didn't have time to enjoy it. It's true and part of it is greed and the need to have more and the other part for some is not being able to manage money properly. Couple that with the fact that they spend more than they have and you have a recipe for having to jump up on that hamster wheel and keep it going, for fear of not making ends meet.

People used to have somewhat of a road to Freedom and somewhere along the way it went to hell in a handbasket. I guess what it really boils down to is that we live in a very different Society than what I grew up with. People worked for things and if you could make life easier, and you were willing to go the route oh, that was fine. But then those looking at you from the outside in, discounting all the hard work and effort that you put into it want the same thing. We've gotten to the point where everybody must own their own house drive two cars, go on vacation that they put on a credit card and can't afford, put their kids through school that they can't afford, and of course let's not forget about clothes and eating out. I did get off tangent didn't I?

I guess my biggest problem is I don't like to see people get ahead despite their family. For their family, with their family, perhaps, but, to put their family aside just to get ahead doesn't make any sense to me. Isn't the whole point of life and living family? And it does not have to be the I am related to you type of family, but it could be whatever you deem to be part of your family. Don't things were better when you are working together instead of just one person working for all. I have to think so. Thank you so much for sharing so much of yourself.

Have a most awesome day out there in sunny South Africa.

So many things you have mentioned all ring true, life is very fast paced one has to stop to consider how to help others along.

As you know I love proverbs, well here is one to consider "It takes a village to raise a child - African Proverb", very similar to belief of UBUNTU which should be put into practice every day.

When we can't/don't work together no-one reaches the destination.
