What a nice change!
Sometimes you notice the weirdest things when you are travelling... Different countries have some pretty different takes on what constitutes normal behaviour. That should be no real surprise, it is just a touch surprising when it is between two relatively similar countries!
So, even a simple thing like a zebra crossing... In the Netherlands (and Europe in general), these things seem to be more of a leap of faith for pedestrians. You practically have to be half way out before cars will stop... And that isn't always guaranteed! In Australia, the moment a car sees you anywhere near a crossing they grind to a half with heaps of room to spare... It was something that I had to get used to in Europe, I would spend ages just standing on the curb waiting for cars to stop!
However, there are things that I see in Australia that I've not like so much... Fast rising prices, a 'free speech' debate getting out of hand, overly rampant 'safety' measures, signage and over explanation for every little thing (think hot cups...)... All things that we have inherited from our Anglo cousins, which would be nice to send back...

It is scary to cross a street when the vehicles haven’t stopped the minute you stretch out your hand or use a crosswalk. A heavy fine here if they don’t.
Yeah, I think there is also a fine in Europe... but maybe the concept of space is a touch different!
Was the last part a rant? I find that annoying sometimes but, I thought that it was just part of the local culture.
A bit of a rant... no, I think it is a bit of an imported thing... I don't remember it being that bad (or that stupid...) when I was growing up!
