While the Founding Fathers would have likely not considered themselves politicians, they perhaps would have identified simply as patriots. Their views on politics were tempered by a distrust of professional politics, something they thought biased decision making toward popularity rather than what was good for the health of the polity. The Founding Fathers were proponents of universal political and philosophical principles but they also considered their first loyalty to be to the United States and their fellow Americans. They possessed a clear understanding that the individual and their right to self determination is in constant danger of being subverted and subordinated. An orientation toward “America first” is fundamentally about protecting Americans from those incursions.
