A week ago I got a flower from one of my groups because we had the last class of this fall season. At home I started wondering about the weird wax bulb the flower had.

It says on the label that you don't need to water the plant at all. If you wanted, you can't. It's impossible because of the wax. But even though I am a complete idiot when it comes to keeping plants alive, I at least try and do not kill the plants on purpose. And I have not yet met a plant that can survive completely without water or nutrients. Eventually plants will die before it's their time without water.

I was pretty sure that this kind of plant would grow and survive more than couple of months, so I did some gooleing. One of the places that sell these say that it is supposed to stay alive conveniently past Christmas and then meant to be thrown away. (My words, not theirs, but that's what their words meant.) But I'm not okay with that! I hate the throw-away society that we have. Plants, toys, tech. Animals, clothes, people. Just put them away when they are too old, broken or out of fashion.

Did some extra googleing and found out that the bulb will slowly start rotting inside the wax and that the plant most probably will bloom only once and then die. Although it is perennial and can develops seeds. So I decided to save this pretty Amaryllis and take care of it until the end of times.

So, my Amaryllis gets to have as long a life as I possibly manage to give it.

I peeled off and washed the wax away with warm water. (Wax off, not on.) Took the metal ring off. Found a pot that's not that big but will have to do. Apparently it doesn't even need that big a pot so that's a good thing. Anyway at least any pot is better than the wax and no water or fertilizers after the nutrients in the bulb is used. Gave the bulb better chances in life with expanded clay, soil, used coffee grounds and eggshells.

The last photo is from today.

Look how happy it is with all it's flower power buddies!

I will promise to take care of you the best way I can, even after Christmas.
I will promise to take care of you the best way I can, even when you are old an worn out.
I will promise to take care of you the best way I can, until death do us part.

This song will do too. Perhaps even better than Whitney Houstons song. :)
