Thistle a flower with history

That plant that grows everywhere, that we ignore it and that in our land to say that you are ugly we always say “it is a thistle”
But who thought it is ugly and worthless?
The thistle with its jagged leaves and its pinkish flower brighten the fields and give life to many small insects.

In Scotland it is a plant with prestige and beloved even with history.
The legends tell that in a war with the night closed and in full darkness, the Scottish soldiers were exhausted and their eyes closed.
Suddenly they heard screams of pain as the adversaries tried to attack barefoot so as not to be heard and pricked themselves with their spikes and could not hold back the cry of pain.

This served for the Scots to wake up and bring down the enemy, so this plant managed to become the emblem of Scotland.
So Scotland has many similar legends, in castles and battles.

Many peoples and nations have stories with these plants.

The cochineal floods its leaves, eating the sage of its stems and defecating a substance that ants love and in these photographs you can see how these red and large ants are eating.

For them it is their garden they walk and eat everything that thistle can catch in their spikes.

We also have mythology of thistle, rather its flower that we call eguzkilore "The flower of the sun"
IMG_3694 copia.jpg
Here is an entry I made two months ago telling our tradition:

“She is the flower of thistle, dried in the sun.
She adorns our hamlets (farmhouses)
Tradition says that if you put it in the doorway, you honor Father Sun.
They also scare away evil spirits.
Mari the lady of the world gave it to us to protect us from elves and demons.
We believe in it so much that we place it in the doorway so that our home is protected and safe ”

Thistle is also used to make cheese because it has a substance that curdles milk.
For medicines and varied food very popular in Navarra.
So why say you're uglier than a thistle?

Interesting information and historic example to go along with your excellent photographs! I can't imagine how painful stepping barefoot on thistles would be! Ouch!

Love your "The flower of the sun" images and the story of the tradition! @txatxy🔆

I was only familiar with milk thistle being a natural remedy/treatment for liver problems (including cirrhosis, jaundice, hepatitis, and gallbladder disorders. Some claim milk thistle may also lowering cholesterol levels - Source mdweb.com).

Have a terrific day, Txatxy!💕
