A family first

While @smallsteps hasn't watched anything on screens at home other than a couple small clips of animals we have talked about like, pandas and kangaroos, we have decided to start introducing something. Today we took her to the cinema, her first movie experience to watch Bamse ja jymykello, a story about a bear that eats honey made from magic flowers to make him really strong. Yep, her first movie experience was a stoner movie - next it is going to be a Cheech and Chong flick.

Now, this film is made for her age group and the theater was filled with young children, however the trailers were for kids in a completely different age demographic. While no one else seemed to mind the scary Frozen 2 clip, @smallsteps buried her head into her mother's armpit and looked away. Seems she needs a bit more desensitization before I take her to what I had suggested - the new Tarantino piece.

Well, having survived a few near tear episodes as she really doesn't like mean characters in any context, we moved on to a park to kill some time and energy before going to grab some food. She is becoming much more confident on the play equipment, but still tends to be pretty conservative in comparison to other children. However, she has always been very precise in her actions and tends to focus on other things around her.

At dinner tonight she said to us while eating, "I have one eye on us, and the other eye on the other people". She means it.She spends a lot of her time observing the people she comes into contact with and tends to eavesdrop on their conversations and laugh along with their laughs. It is quite funny when having coffee with her as if we are sitting next to a group of young girls laughing, she fake laughs along with them in an incredibly overemphasized, loud and mocking tone.

It was a nice day out and while we are all still in various stages of poor health recovery, we managed to spend a few hours together. The warm days are fast coming to an end and the last few days before this have been quite rainy so, we are trying to take advantage of being outside while we can.

And then while we were driving home @smallsteps suggested that she and Daddy do a spot of coloring in, which we did before her bath. For a three year old, she does a pretty damn good job of staying within the lines and being patient with the images so that they are mostly colored before she wants to move onto the next. While she enjoys coloring, we also have stacks of blank paper around as she also likes to draw and create herself.

We generally don't do a lot of planned activities but perhaps a trip to the movies occasionally and a meal out could be added as something special from time to time. I was talking with a friend last night about all the activities parents plan and rush around too, as if they are afraid to actually spend time with their kids.

Children are often reflections of ourselves so, if you don't want to be with your kids, what does that say?

:)

She throws her head back as she does it, just to make it a little more obvious :)

Hah! Teenage girls are allowed to laugh at older people, particularly guys because it is understood that a very low threshold for embarrassment (second hand embarrassment is embarrassment, too) is part of their developmental stage.

When a three-year-old does it, the target has no defense whatsoever. Not even when the three-year-old does it in such an obvious deliberate manner. :)

I am pretty sure that she is going to catch on to how much power she has as a child and will wield it like a tyrant ;D

When I told my daughter about this, her comment was, literally: "This three-year-old out here roasting people ten years older than her!"

One of the upsides of my recent knee surgery, other then two weeks off of work, was that I was able to spend more time with my son. It's not how I would have like it, mostly siting around instead of running around playing games, but still more time then I would have other wise.

It is nice to take any opportunity available and sometimes sitting around is just what is needed. WE tend to do a lit of sitting around drawing, talking, reading etc - so for us getting out of the house is needed.

Hahahaha, yeh, just don't forget and be sure to take a ton of photos of your daughter's face after that stunning stoner experience. LoL

Uhm yeah, well, then this looks like it could be even a better idea. :)

It was a nice day out and while we are all still in various stages of poor health recovery, we managed to spend a few hours together.

Oh! now, this looks like a much more stunning stoner experience. Isn't it my friend? I hope each one of you overcome the health annoyances very soon and get the chance to spend as a happy family many more hours together in good shape.

Cheers!!

With her sensitivities, I have no idea how often there will be movies released we can take her to and we aren't going to have the habit at home. Too much staring involved, not enough thought.

Yep! maybe better & cheaper just leave her sitting alone in front of her own PC and a large monitor on Youtube and allow All Hell Break Loose through flicks chosen by herself. Hahahaha

Always great to experience firsts together as a family! It seems as the long time of sacrifices is starting to show results for the family!

Yep, we are coming out of the woods so to speak, but I just have to watch out for spanners, as they tend to get thrown into the works at times like this. :)

Aweee so lovely. But I do have to ask, with all the art going on, how do you keep your walls so white 😁.

I bring my kids to a lot of activities, football, dancing, swimming, gymnastics, music class. The list goes. It does a few things. Keeps them of the streets, with all the other kids hanging around, do you really think they wanna stay in with me lol. Keeps them off screens. Stops them arguing with each other. Gives them experiences and opportunities I cant give give them alone. And if their friends are going too, then there is the peer pressure they are under. And, it gives me a chance to get the shopping done and meet with other mums cos my work/life balance can be isolating. There are many reasons parents rush around for activities and most often it's not because they dont want to spend time with their kids.

The painting stays at the grandparents...
Actually, we have been pretty well blessed so far as she has only ripped two pages in a book (same book) when she was under one, and has never written on anything she shouldn't. :fingerscrossed: Also, when she eats she wipes her own mouth with a napkin :D

I think there s a balance between not enough and too much and partents seem to spend way too much time on screens themselves these days. Just tonight I watched a family at the restaurant (I don't know if hot wings classifies as a restaurant) with two kids and all of them sat there the entire time on their phones. I find it strange when people don't look at each other or talk during a meal.

meet with other mums

I can get onboard with this.

She is an absolute treasure and I can't wait to get some more time with a flash, but it would have been annoying for people at the cinema ;D

Well, imho for stunning and rememberable family portraits the natural light is Da Best. Any on camera flash just makes everything too much digital and different mood. And studio flashes is completely defferent story...

I have an EM-1 so it has no on-cam. At the moment I only have one off-cam flash but hopefully one day will get another to experiment with. I have not really been much of a portrait photographer and prefer taking pictures of things that don't complain about how they look after ;D
