Trail to the Stamp Mill - Infrared Photography

(Edited)

I brought my friend @whangster79 along on a hike to an old mining site in the forest. We walked through the woods along the river and got to see a group of machines that would crush rocks into small pieces to extract gold from.

The trail was running along the creek and we got to see frogs and small fish move around in the water.

Many trees have fallen since the last time I visited, there was probably a strong storm or two that came through the area. Maybe snow brought them down in the winter as well. We did get eight inches of snow a year or two back.

rw-1200656.jpg

It was pretty muddy in many areas, having to use logs and sticks to traverse across the soggy areas.

@whangster79 looks for a log to walk on through a muddy area of the trail. Small streams come from the mountain and slow into this creek.

rw-1200657.jpeg

The trail can be seen as a bare spot in the grass and bushes growing along the trail.

If it was not for all the fallen trees, a kayak or small canoe may be able to traverse the creek. It would be a fun way of checking out the surrounding woodlands.

I take pictures with a special camera. Its a Mirrorless DSLR that has been modified by Life Pixel to see light in other wavelengths. This allows my camera to see light in the Infrared [IR] around 1300 NM wavelength, through the visual spectrum and into the Ultraviolet A and B wavelengths roughly into the 300 NM wavelength.

I carry many filters on me to make the photos you see in my blog, these filters screw on my lens and help me isolate certain wavelengths for certain scenes. These filters can be IR / UV pass-through filters to assist me get a natural photo taking out the UV and IR light. Or I may use a Infrared pass-through filter capture just IR light. I can do the same with UV light as well, though I need some better filters which they can cost a few hundred dollars for true Ultraviolet pass through filters. So for right now I have B + W 403 bandpass filters that still allow some IR light in, due to their cheaper material.

There are also exotic glasses made of sapphire and germanium I am open to working with to replace my silica glass hot mirror with a material that allows even longer wavelengths of infrared to enter my cameras sensor. Special sensors, lenses and filters of that material would be needed as well, so it would be a big project but one that may give some even more unique photography results.

@enginewitty it sure does have that feeling. The trail is between a mountain side and the water so you do kinda feel trapped down in that area. It's kinda spooky. Haha I'm going to look into that fort you mentioned on #pypt thanks for the tip

@priyanarc ah thanks alot. I just bought a second Lumix GH3 camera that I can do regular pictures with. Unfortunately trying to do both infrared and visual light with my modified camera does not always turn out well. So my second GH3 will help me capture what the forest looks like to us.

Thanks much for the curation.

@sgt-dan thanks very much. That is a great shot. I like how the grass is so reflective but the mud is dark black.

Thanks alot for the tokens too!
