One Tough Little Frog

avatar

Today, I emptied our bowl of fruit and vegetable trimmings and waste into our compost tumbler that's in our backyard. It had been a while since I had tumbled or spun them so I gave them many spins to really mix up the contents. I was curious what it looked like inside after the spin so I opened up the lid on one of the tumblers and WHAO! There was a little frog inside. It seemed to be unharmed and still in good health, a tough little frog indeed!

The frog has now been relocated to my front yard where I have a few garden beds with water drip systems. Hopefully the veggie garden will be a decent environment for the frog to be happy in. A much better spot than a compost tumbler that gets spun every few days...

I believe this is a Pacific Chorus Frog, grey form. Pseudocris regilla.

How'd the frog get into the compost tumbler? Well... if you look closely at the first photo, you may notice that some of the corners are missing on the old tumblers. We have black bears in Tahoe and when they get hungry enough, the'll try to break into the tumblers. Most of the time they can't get in but some of the corners have obviously been chewed off. A couple times, they have been able to get a panel off. There's never really anything missing because the leftover fruits and veggies is NASTY, even for a hungry bear.

Oh, you may have noticed... I haven't posted on steem for a while. I'm still here and looking forward to seeing what comes of the new hardfork. But I was out of town for a week visiting family, then came back with a bad cold that has had me down hard for about a week. Hopefully I'll be back to shooting Tahoe sunsets soon... And I hope you are all doing great!

It was pretty cute indeed. Hopefully it's still somewhere in the veggie garden because it's pretty dry everywhere else. The garden is pretty pathetic this year though... Had a rough start due to health issues and a winter that just wouldn't give up. I believe a lot of the seeds I had planted froze when they were sprouting.
