Odeon of Herodes Atticus
This is an ancient theater, on the south side of the Acropolis, called Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
Named after its founder, it was built around 161 AD but it is still used for concerts, since it has one of the best acoustics in the world!

Talking about acoustics...it is amazing how people in the audience forget about that side of it....
Many years ago, Margot Fontein and Rudolf Nureyev (he was an explosively powerful dancer whose grace and beauty revolutionised ballet) appeared at this theatre, so our entire family went. We had seats in the front row and to one side of us we saw the younger brother of President Kennedy (with all his secret service agents) . He saw Maria Callas sitting (closer to us but on the other side of us) so he asked one of the agents to tell her he would like to meet her...would she please go to him.
When she heard the message (remember, she was a professional opera singer, so ... I doubt she forgot about the acoustics) she spoke clearly and, though she spoke softly, it was loud enough to be heard right at the back, "Tell Mr Kennedy a gentleman never asks a lady to go to him; he goes to her."
Everybody in the theatre laughed as Kennedy rushed over to apologise....
To me, that was the bonus to being present at a historical moment, for it was one of the last times the two worlds best ballet dancers danced together. I am not a lover of ballet, but the way these two danced...it was full of power, energy, grace ... and magic.
