Pollution broke all the records in Serbia this January. Most of the month hard and stinky fog covered Smederevo, preventing normal breathing. There were only a few sunny days. This Sunday was a chance for a walk… to the flea market! An excelent opportunity to breathe some fresh air and meet friends.

At the entrance to the flea market (or exit, depending on where you are heading) there is a stand with an interesting variant of home-made crafts – Serbian slava (celebration of a patron Saint) bottles with a painted icons of Saints. Here, you can also find nice trays, coffee, tea & spice bowls, and other artfully crafted little things, but bottles are by far the most interesting. Take, for example, this bottle with the image of Saint Nicholas:

Of course, not every item at the flea market is an artwork, but you can find some most interesting and useful pottery – like this clay pot that allows preparation of unforgettably delicious meals.

But that's just the beginning. You wouldn’t believe what can be found there, so sometimes it can be hard to get through the crowd.

For example, do you need parts for old digital cameras, remote controlers, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, batteries ... Do you know that a lens of a deceased digital camera can serve as a macro-lens for your super-phenomenal new smartphone?

No need to hide your exuberance with this offer, there are other interesting things. Like this Olivetti typewriter “Lettera”, which was a dream come true for young and aspiring writers. The secretaries carried it as their dowry. While they existed, service people greeted it with open arms. Ah, those good old times!

Or, look at this Panasonic beauty with Leica lens, from pre-bitcoin era… Mere 10 years old!

You can find everything. If you are ready for a little digging…

And when you get tired, you can find some refreshment there. Coffee оr tea?

Feeling peckish? Cheap and warm mekitsa (kinda doughnut) at uncle Tom’s are waiting for you! Just 3.2 STE (no additions).

After the refreshment, you can continue your search reinvigorated.

Two friends from Kragujevac have found a beautiful Spalding basketball, ideal for outdoor games! Too bad my sports career is finished, or I would rather joined them.

If you came for fleas, the flea market is the right place! Oops, this doggy didn't come for fleas, but just to walk his human :)

You can even find quite mysterious items. This shiny ball probably dropped off of some UFO…

It is not all buy at the flea market. You can also sell something to the sellers there. For example, this guy has a skinhead tyres, and desperately need a better ones for his Peugeot before the first snow. Help him if you have a better set, even if they’re used!

This is not a small area to walk around in fairly cold weather and biting cold sunshine. It can be really tiring ...

Another tea for the road?

If you are getting really tired, take the opportunity to buy a nice cushion for a pleasant rest, and that from the youngest flea market seller.
