Monomad Streets

I come here just about every day because there is plenty to see if you enjoy street scenes - and because there is a coffee shop with an outdoor patio that just reopened.

The lighting can be difficult on a bright sunny day. I switch the viewfinder of my mirrorless camera to monochrome and immerse myself in the black and white world...

Greetings from the partially reopened streets of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

I'd like to stick around a little longer but my coffee is cold and I gotta go!

All photos are by me, @keithboone.

I took these shots over the past few days for the Monomad Photography Challenge by @brumest and @monochromes. Thanks for visiting!

I know that switching to monochrome mode is good to learn to see black&white and to see the contrasts, but I have to admit that I most times forget about that.

I think I like the second photo with the girl on the phone most, although the panning shot of the motorcycle riders is great and as a Harley rider I should prefer this one, but the other photo made me somehow think of the word innocence and I just like it 😊 (don't forget it for the letter i ;).

Thanks, Johann. I do enjoy seeing monochrome in the viewfinder although I can easily convert to monochrome in post if I forget to set it. I'm happy you like the photos!

Good morning Keith,

I don't do street photography and in my eyes many street photos are just snapshots of walking people or busy streets, I can't see a story or a theme behind the photos like I did when I saw the girl with her phone, bu talso the couple walking with the bicycle between them tells me something 😉
Maybe that's only because I don't shoot such photos myself.

I sometimes switch to monochrome just to see more contrasts. It teaches your eyes to see the differences between light and shadow and colors better, but as said, I forget it most times ;)

Have a great day 🙂

Good morning, Johnn. The challenge of street photography is to tell a story. Most of my attempts do not succeed with this, but that is always the intention.

Good morning Keith,

I agree, a picture can be so beautiful, if I can not see a story behind it, it is only a beautiful picture and I will look at the next photo in a moment.

Have a great day and a wonderful weekend - and take care 🙂

Photos turned out beautiful in Monomad, Keith. They are all great with nice lighting. I really like the first one with the contrast of the light color of the Chinese lanterns against the darker shades in the photo.

I hope your coffee didn’t get too cold to drink.

Thank you! I screwed up and didn't post in the community. Communities confuse me sometimes. I find it hard to find people's posts.

Yup! There is just something so 'charming' about street-scenes. It is as if an unaware world is presenting itself for observation while being fully oblivious to the observer. All human life is there creating an ever-changing tapestry that is just so endearing to see.

Some vistas just look more mood laden in monochrome and it is strange how it can affect the viewers emotions when observing the image. For instance I am certain t was not the intent but I almost take the monochrome vista as being slightly melancholy, a view of a world that is slowly waking up after recent events, lockdowns and such...

Strange how something as vibrant and colourful as Chinese lanterns becomes more about texture and definition once drained of it's natural ((but loud)) exuberance. Lovely depth in that last photo it pings the senses immediately, it really is very striking in quite a contrasting way to the laziness of the pace and vibe of the girl looking at her phone in the previous shot.

Nice to see your creations as ever Keith, always great to cross paths 😎

Thank you Steven, I do like the 'frozen moment in time' captured in street scenes, and I've come to really enjoy monochrome. I'm glad you enjoyed these images. Thanks for taking the time to make such a thoughtful comment!
