[Blog] --> Spiders and Ants - Phidippus audax (Jumping Spider) & Lycosidae (Wolf Spider)

(Edited)

Good early morning, Hive!

I have some pictures for you.

During an hour long sun tanning session, somewhat interrupted by clouds...
I sat up to discover that a jumping spider had taken
the initiative to come and see what I was up to.

I was quite suprised, as everything else that climbed on me
was just a few, stray ants exploring the area.

This wasn't too suprising, seeing as how they're everywhere,
and very close nearby, there was a colony moving their brood
from one colony to somewhere hidden in the garden.

First...

🕷 Pictures of the jumping spider. 🕷

-> Ohoh, my goodness. So cute, and tiny, and DEADLY!
Look. At. Those. Fangs.
and
Those itty-bitty hairrrrs. ^_^

-> Didn't seem to mind the forest of arm hairs.
Very playful and curious species.
The colours on the abdomen are UV-emitting in sunlight
and are used to signal mating based on reflectivity.

I suspect this is a male, based on abdomen shape.

-> I was laying on some towels, and the spider was
navigating the strange, thready biome.

After the spider disappeared into the grass, I looked ahead
and spotted a wolf-spider sitting atop a garden rock
about five feet away.

-> Quite sizable. Could be a female who is recently pregnant.

-> Shotly after this picture, the wolf spider scurried back into the garden
or underneath the rock.

After this I payed more attention to...

the trail of ants making their way across the pavement.

I could see they were carrying their brood elsewhere.
I'd witnessed this days before with another nearby colony,
or even the same one. Hard to track them in the grass and garden.

20200528_13443101.jpg
-> 3 large brood being moved.
Top between the greenery - a larger ant.
Maybe a guard watching over the transfer and providing protection.

20200528_13443901.jpg
-> Three more ants accompanied by a guard to protect them.

That's all for today.

Cheers everyone. Thanks for viewing. :)

Oh, thanks! I had to take a few to get the right shots. Spiders don't always pose for pictures.
